USA Today’s 2025 rankings of the top 10 boardwalks in the country are out—and three New Jersey favorites made the list. Known for their mix of charm, beautiful Shoreline views, and family-friendly attractions, these Garden State boardwalks stand out on the national stage.

The Wildwoods Boardwalk has claimed the top spot as the Best Boardwalk in the country, according to USA Today. Spanning three amusement piers, this Jersey Shore favorite offers more than 100 rides and attractions—from roller coasters and waterparks to classic arcade games, boardwalk eats, and shopping.

In the warmer months, watch for the Wildwoods Boardwalk Sightseer Tram Cars, known for their famous phrase, “Watch the Tram Car, Please!” Or rent a bike to get to the northern end along the seawall, which takes you into North Wildwood, and includes access to the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse.

Across from the Wildwoods Convention Center, which hosts family-friendly events year-round, but slightly off the boardwalk is the Doo Wop Experience Museum, steeped in nostalgia from the ’50s and ’60s, which was recently named one of the best pop culture museum in the country, also by USA Today readers.

There have been new additions to the area, such as Madison Resorts in Wildwood Crest and the Honky Tonk Saloon in Wildwood, plus the complete rebuilding of the boardwalk itself.

Upcoming events in Wildwood include the Barefoot Country Music Fest in June and the new Thunder Over The Waves Air Show in September. There are lots of free events, fireworks, concerts and beaches throughout the summer, too.

Atlantic City came in at No. 6 on the USA Today list, just months after being named the country’s best boardwalk according to TimeOut Magazine. It’s the world’s oldest and longest boarwalk, so as you pass by the casinos, check the entertainment schedule at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, pay tribute at the New Jersey Korean War Memorial, walk onto the sand to a beach bar, shop at Playground Pier, or hit the rides at Steel Pier. Take a walk toward the end to visit the recently reopened Atlantic City Aquarium.

AC will be part of the North to Shore Festival in June, and then The Soar & Shore Festival and air show flies above the shoreline in July.

Ocean City came in at No. 8 after being named the coolest city in New Jersey by the Discoverer. Hot spots along the boardwalk include Playland’s Castaway Cove, OC’s oldest amusement park with 32 rides; Sandcastle Putt Club mini golf; Shriver’s and Johnson’s Popcorn; and JiLLy’s French Fry Factory.

Coming up this spring are Martin Z. Mollusk Day, a Spring Block Party, the Spring Cruisin’ car show, Ocean City Schools Art Showcase, the OCNJ triathlon and duathlon, Unlocking of the Ocean Plunge, Memorial Beach Challenge, and a Memorial Day service.

To determine the best boardwalks, an expert panel assembled by USA TODAY 10BEST nominated the most outstanding boardwalks in the country, and then readers voted for their faves.

When you’re ready to hit the town for the best nightlife in the Wildwoods, everybody heads to the Anglesea section of North Wildwood.

It’s the nightlife hotspot from Anglesea all the way down to Diamond Beach. Everyone that heads to the island in the summer knows that North Wildwood is THE stomping grounds for a fun night out on the town complete with plenty of bar hopping.

Unfortunately, there will be one less hotspot for locals and tourists enjoy come summer 2025.

North Shore Bar and Kitchen on New York Avenue in North Wildwood will not be reopening this summer. They closed after summer 2023 for renovations, but locals won’t get to see the work come to fruition in time for summer kickoff.

The owner, Marlton-resident Ryan Fitzpatrick, put out a message on North Shore’s Facebook page alerting the public that North Shore will be placed on the market.

Sadly, he has announced that he's accepting offers for 301 New York Avenue.

It’s the end of an era. I used to spend my summers dancing to Triple Rail Turn and getting some of the best Orange Crushes on the island made especially for me by bartender Tommy.

The news of North Shore getting sold is such a bummer for those of us who made it our go-to spot over the years.

I’ll miss the fried pickles, orange crushes, and live music the most.

Thanks for the memories, North Shore. Your island vibes will be missed.

The Hereford Inlet to Cape May Inlet Study is evaluating erosion and storm damage potential for the municipalities on Five Mile Island. Erosion has adversely affected the beach and dunes in North Wildwood increasing the risk of storm damage, while excessive accretion of sand along the central and southern portions of the island has caused health, environmental, and storm-water drainage problems in Wildwood Crest.

LOCATION The study area includes Five Mile Island, located on the Atlantic Coast of New Jersey between Hereford and Cape May Inlets in Cape May County.

DESCRIPTION: The project area consists of the municipalities of North Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Lower Township. These municipalities are vulnerable to storm damage all year round from a combination of hurricanes and nor’easters. The project area will be restricted to the beachfront and tapered at the southern and northern ends at Hereford Inlet and the USFW/Coast Guard properties. The Non-Federal sponsor is the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).

The City of North Wildwood has been experiencing significant erosion of its berm and dune, especially along the northern sections of the municipality’s oceanfront, since the 1990’s; what was once the largest beach in the state, has experienced approximately 1,100 feet of shoreline retreat, most of which has occurred during that time. In contrast to North Wildwood, sand accretion in Wildwood and Wildwood Crest historically has caused extensive maintenance problems with their storm water management system and creates public health hazards on the beaches. The excess sand clogs storm-water outfalls which causes associated interior flooding and creates pools of stagnant water which produces unhealthy beach conditions. The excessive infilling at the seaward extents of the outfalls traps rainwater and requires the municipalities to regularly excavate the ends of the pipes to allow for adequate drainage. Periodically, these excavation efforts have to occur during stormy periods with higher wave activity where access becomes more problematic. Once the trapped rainwater is released, the subsequent high-volume discharge of impounded storm water can also cause spikes in poor water quality.

The recommended plan includes a berm and dune system along the Atlantic Coast for the communities of North Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest & Lower Township. The total project length is approximately 25,000 feet with a dune elevation of 16 feet NAVD88 and berm elevation of 6.5 feet NAVD88. The project would be accomplished by backpassing sand from those areas along the project in Wildwood and Wildwood Crest that have an excess accumulation. The project includes periodic nourishment.

The Project Partnership Agreement was executed with the NJDEP in 2017 and design plans are 65% complete. The recommended plan includes a berm and dune system along the Atlantic oceanfront for the communities of North Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, and Lower Twp. The total project length is approximately 25,000 linear feet, with a berm of varying widths at elevation 6.5 feet NAVD88 and a dune with crest elevation at 16 feet NAVD88 along the entire length of the project. The project would be accomplished by backpassing sand from those areas along the project in Wildwood and Wildwood Crest that have an excess accumulation of sand.

STATUS: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection continue to work towards construction of this critical project. Prior to proceeding to construct the project, the Federal government needs permission from the appropriate landowners in the form of Real Estate easements. NJDEP is actively pursuing the appropriate easements on approximately 124 individual parcels. USACE and NJDEP also continue to work with the local municipalities to address several design elements that need to be resolved prior to construction. The earliest date for construction is estimated at Fall 2026 subject to the resolution of the above-mentioned items.

PROJECT GOALS: The purpose of this project is to provide coastal storm risk management benefits along 5-mile Island. These benefits include reduced risk of damage to homes, businesses, roads and infrastructure. The project includes construction of a dune and elevated berm system along the entire length of the project. The project is eligible for periodic nourishments at four-year intervals.

BACKPASSING TECHNOLOGY: Provides high quality sand that is currently present on the beaches in the Wildwoods as a renewable alternative to offshore borrow areas, , reduces beach maintenance, and has lower emissions than traditional dredging.

Over the last four decades, visitors to The Wildwoods have seen changes to the roads that enter the island.

Whether you take Exit 6 off the Garden State Parkway for North Wildwood or Exit 4 for the City of Wildwood, both highways and bridges entering the Shore Town have gone through a metamorphosis.

The biggest change for locals and vacationers coming to The Wildwoods was the overhaul of North Wildwood Boulevard in the 1990s.

The current set of bridges that connect the drivers from the mainland on Route 147 to Ocean Drive entering North Wildwood was a major construction project that replaced hazardous bridges that were dangerous for travelers.

Now 30 years, the latest update on this major South Jersey Highway will impact drivers heading into North Wildwood.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation sent a letter to the Middle Township City Council detailing changes to the Speed Limit on a specific section of Route 147 entering North Wildwood.

According to the US Census Bureau, the Middle Township border extends to both bridges on Route 147, and the North Wildwood city limit begins at the bottom of the Beach Creek Bridge.

Even though the majority of Route 147 runs through Middle Township, the North Wildwood Boulevard Highway is a State Road and ultimately the responsibility of New Jersey DOT.

*From the Garden State Parkway to the Grassy Sound Free Bridge, the Speed Limit will remain 50 MPH

*The section from the bottom of the Grassy Sound Free Bridge to the beginning of the Beach Creek Bridge, where Route 147 merges with Ocean Drive (County Road 619), will decrease to 40 MPH

*At the bottom of the Beach Creek Bridge, where the start of the North Wildwood City Border, drivers will be required to decrease their speed to 25 MPH (previously 30 MPH)

While the New Jersey DOT is still in the process of installing all of the traffic signs for these changes, the new Speed Limits are already being enforced and became effective in March 2025. So remember to Slow Down when driving into the City of North Wildwood.
