DUI Lawyers in West Windsor, NJ

New Jersey has some of the toughest laws in the country regarding drunk driving, specifically driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving under the influence (DUI). Notably, there's a strict prohibition against plea bargaining to reduce DWI charges. A first-time conviction for drunk driving can result in hefty fines, a possible jail sentence of up to 30 days, and a 90-day suspension of your driving privileges, not to mention additional financial repercussions that can linger.

If you find yourself arrested for driving under the influence, prepare for mandatory license suspension, the potential for jail time, and a staggering minimum of $6,575 in fines and surcharges if convicted. If your insurance company catches wind of the conviction, you may have to pay significant premium increases over the next three years

The truth is that New Jersey's courts are notoriously harsh on people arrested for DUI and DWI. The penalties are substantial and can have a lasting impact on your freedom, work, and life as a whole. Fortunately, working with a quality DUI lawyer - like Edward G. Appel - can help prevent serious charges from going on your permanent record.

DUI Field Sobriety and BAC Tests in New Jersey

Authorities use several types of tests to ascertain whether a driver is under the influence. These tests consist of field sobriety tests, breath analysis, and blood examinations. However, the outcomes of these evaluations can sometimes be misleading. Edward G. Appel has the expertise to recognize and demonstrate the inaccuracies in these results to protect your freedom.

What Happens After You're Arrested for a DUI in New Jersey?

Most people feel anxious and frightened after getting arrested for DWI because they are uncertain about what comes next. That's why it's so important to understand what to anticipate following a DUI arrest - so you can prepare yourself. The initial step in the legal process is the arraignment, which is a court session that occurs soon after your DUI arrest. At this session, the judge will outline the charges that have been brought against you and give you a summary of the penalties you might face. A significant number of traffic cases are settled with plea agreements, but prosecutors are prohibited from providing these arrangements in DUI cases.

That means you have two options: You can plead guilty and face the full penalties of a DUI conviction, or you can plead not guilty and continue to fight for your rights. There is a chance that your charges could be dropped before the trial, but this usually occurs only if there are significant weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence. The judge in your case will decide the outcome after both parties have presented their evidence. Instead of going through this complicated legal process by yourself, call a New Jersey DUI lawyer like Edward G. Appel. It could mean the difference between years of hardship and a clean record.

Understanding DUI Charges in New Jersey: Criminal vs. Traffic Offenses

In New Jersey, driving under the influence (DUI) is categorized as a traffic violation, though the consequences of DUI charges are severe. However, a license suspension is not mandatory for all offenders. First-time offenders arrested with a blood alcohol content (BAC) level under 0.15% may avoid suspension if they quickly install an ignition interlock device (IID) in their personal vehicle. Other potential penalties associated with a DUI conviction can include community service, fines, and, in certain situations, imprisonment. Depending on the circumstances of your case, working with experienced DUI attorneys in West Windsor, NJ, can help you avoid some or all of these punishments.

You may also be charged with DUI if you operate a vehicle while under the influence of any intoxicating substances, regardless of whether they are illegal, prescribed, or available over the counter. The specific type of drug is irrelevant; what matters is your impairment and inability to drive safely.

If convicted of a drug-related DUI, you could face:

  • A license suspension of 7 to 12 months
  • Up to 30 days of incarceration
  • Fines and surcharges exceeding $3,500

A second conviction may result in a jail sentence ranging from 2 to 90 days and a 2-year suspension of your driver's license, along with increased fines and surcharges.

Here's What to Expect After Your 1st DUI Charge in New Jersey

Many individuals charged with DUI believe that they will receive leniency if it's their first offense, but this is not always true. First-time offenders may incur significant fines, up to 30 days of incarceration, and the compulsory installation of an ignition interlock device (IID) in their vehicle. Penalties increase for first-time offenders with a BAC of 0.10% or more at the time of arrest.

As mentioned above, these individuals face a longer mandatory IID installation period, larger fines, and the potential for jail time. First-time offenders will also experience a rise in their auto insurance premiums after their arrest. The State of New Jersey takes DUI offenses seriously, even for those encountering it for the first time.

Here's What to Expect After Your 2nd DUI Charge in New Jersey

Defendants who are charged again within 10 years of a prior conviction face increased penalties for a second DUI offense. They may be fined up to $1,000 and must serve at least 48 hours in jail, with a maximum of 90 days. Additionally, a second conviction can lead to 30 days of community service, a one-to-two-year license suspension, and two to four years of mandatory ignition interlock device (IID) use. These consequences, along with higher insurance rates, can significantly affect a repeat offender's life.

Here's What to Expect After Your 3rd DUI Charge in New Jersey

The court has the authority to impose stringent penalties on individuals with two or more DUI convictions within the past decade. If a person is found guilty of DUI for the third time in a 10- year span, the court may sentence them to 180 days in jail along with a $1,000 fine. Those convicted for the third time will lose their driving licenses for a duration of 8 years.

The court may also require these offenders to install an ignition interlock device for a period of two to four years after their driving rights are reinstated. Because third-time offenders are categorized as high-risk drivers, they will likely face significantly increased auto insurance rates. These individuals should anticipate an extra $1,500 surcharge on their auto insurance each year for three consecutive years. Given that these penalties can have a serious impact on both personal and professional aspects of life, it is crucial to contest the charges with help from a skilled DUI attorney like Edward G. Appel.

How Do DUI Lawyers in West Windsor, NJ, Help with DUI Cases?

Hiring a well-respected DUI lawyer often has a major impact on your case's outcome. Great attorneys will get started immediately by taking a deep dive into the particulars of your case. They'll look for issues with the prosecution's evidence, such as:

  • Did on-scene officers follow protocol when storing samples and administering chemical tests?
  • Did officers have a valid reason for pulling you over to begin with?
  • Are the results from your chemical tests reliable?

If not, a lawyer can expose these concerns, potentially resulting in the dismissal of the charges. These are just a few examples of how an attorney can challenge DUI charges for you.

At the law firm of Edward G. Appel, we thoroughly investigate every detail when defending our clients. In fact, our clients benefit from personalized attention, support, and a meticulously crafted defense that aligns with the specific details of their arrest. We're not satisfied until our lawyers have explored every potential defense strategy for your case. Through comprehensive investigation, negotiation, and, when required, litigation, we strive to achieve the best possible outcome for our clients.

Clients choose us not to simply enter a guilty plea but to robustly contest the charges against them. While no attorney can promise specific outcomes, we assure you that we will continue to advocate for you until you decide otherwise. We examine every detail of your case to ensure all necessary evidence is gathered and the right motions are submitted. There are motions available to suppress evidence if your constitutional rights were infringed upon during the stop, as well as motions to limit or dismiss evidence under particular conditions. Contact us today to evaluate your case. We are eager to help you, even if it's just to provide an initial consultation.

After defeating fourth-seeded Pennsauken Tech in the semifinal round of the BCSL conference tournament on Wednesday, West Windsor-Plainsboro South knew it had a chance to do something special.

Later in the afternoon, top-seeded West Windsor-Plainsboro South (19-7) had a date with crosstown rival, second-seeded West Windsor-Plainsboro North (19-7) in the final round, with both teams looking for its first county title in school history.

Complete Box Score »

West Windsor-Plainsboro South earned a 2-0 (25-23,25-23) victory, sweeping its rival after earning a 2-0 victory in the semifinal round, a dominant display on the surface, but the championship game provided a ton of grit and belief from David Colon’s group.

“Coming into today, we had lost to North twice during the regular season,” West Windsor-Plainsboro South head coach David Colon said. “To bounce back and sweep them 2-0 in the biggest match of the season so far was incredible. It’s a true testament to the growth, resilience, and maturity of our young team.”

West Windsor-Plainsboro South fell behind 7-0 to begin the second set, but its experience in tight games allowed them to prevail and regroup, leading to its second straight 25-23 victory to clinch the title.

“The start of the second set could have rattled us,” Colon said. “We didn’t let it, and I feel our experience in tight games paid dividends today. The way we responded and battled back to take the match speaks volumes about our mental toughness and the growth we have shown this season under pressure.”

South won the WJVL title in 2016 under head coach Michael Hussong’s leadership, but to get back to contention and earn the BCSL was a pivotal checkpoint for a storybook season thus far for the tournament’s top seed.

Srivishal More led the way with 15 kills, to go along with four digs, and four service points for South.

Varun Shenoy added seven digs and 25 assists in the victory.

In the semifinal round, West Windsor-Plainsboro North earned its program record-breaking 19th win of the season, breaking the record of 18 which was reached in both ’23 and ’24.

“In both matches our offense was strong, ” North head coach Ryan Lagomarsino said. “We were able to generate great swings when we were in system, unfortunately, our blocking and defense was not where it needed to be and I always tell the boys that defense wins championships. Overall, my guys played well and I am proud of them.”

(PRINCETON JUNCTION, NJ) -- West Windsor Arts invites the community to lace up their sneakers and get ready for ArtWalk 2025, a popular annual family event and fundraiser happening on Sunday, June 1, 2025 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. This year features a new early evening start time, a festive carnival atmosphere, and more wellness-focused and hands-on activities than ever before.

“ArtWalk 2025 is all about celebrating community, creativity and wellness—in a way that’s accessible and fun for everyone,” notes Aylin Green, Executive Director of West Windsor Arts. Whether you’re taking an easy-paced stroll through the neighborhood, dancing to live music, or creating fun objects doing art projects, there’s an activity planned to accommodate every age and interest. “We’re keeping all the favorite traditions from past ArtWalks, but adding a fresh twist to welcome summer with new activities,” she notes.

The event begins at 4:00pm when participants can pick up a map and a goodie bag and then set off on a one-mile Family Fun Walk featuring a scavenger hunt. Along the way, they can collect tokens, which can later be redeemed for art projects, games, face painting and prizes back at the arts center.

The festive summer vibe continues with live music curated by Vasanti Anand, a popcorn machine, and a variety of fitness challenges led by local instructors including F3 and dancer Shivani Badgi. Those looking to relax and unwind can choose to enjoy meditation, massage therapy courtesy of Hand and Stone East Windsor, or henna designs from local artists.

“ArtWalk is a day for your mind, body and community spirit,” adds Green. “We want families to make the day their own—try something new, express themselves creatively, or just enjoy time together.”

Activity stations include painting Kindness Rocks, decorating sneaker keychains, and contributing to a collaborative graffiti mural with artist Mikel Cirkus. What’s more, medical students from Robert Wood Johnson will be offering free blood pressure screenings and education, encouraging health awareness as part of the event’s wellness theme.

The Silent Auction—featuring exclusive offerings from local restaurants, shops and service providers—is another highlight, offering attendees a chance to score great finds while supporting a worthy cause. Plus, several community sponsors will be on-site with activities and information to share.

Admission is $25 per family or $10 per individual, and all proceeds support West Windsor Arts, helping the nonprofit continue to offer concerts, community days, art camps and artist resources throughout the year.

ArtWalk 2025 is made possible thanks to our generous supporters. A special thank-you to our Presenting Sponsor, Princeton Federal Credit Union, and additional sponsors including Mercadien, MarketFair, Schwab, and The Parris Family.

Perched in the Southfield Commons Shopping Center in West Windsor Township, Grover’s Mill Coffee House offers more than just a cup of joe and a Danish — it summons patrons to step into a nostalgic world where science fiction meets caffeine.

The coffee house, owned by Isa Elci, memorializes the town’s unique history and legacy, drawing inspiration from the 1953 sci-fi film The War of the Worlds. The film was based on a radio broadcast adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel, which aired on Oct. 30, 1938, and famously convinced listeners that an alien invasion was underway in nearby Grover’s Mill, New Jersey.

Grover’s Mill Coffee House combines the comfort of a cozy living room with the appeal of movie enthusiasts and just a sprinkle of a science fiction museum.

The scent of fresh espresso and strong coffee grounds hovers in the air, mixed with warm pastries and baked goods like bagels and croissants, layered with a hint of nostalgia.

Walls are lined with alien-themed merchandise, vintage movie posters, and yellowed newspaper clippings from the 1938 broadcast that gave the coffee shop its name. Between the indie art, soft couches, and worn tables, the space exudes a laid-back, mystical vibe.

Iced and luminous under the cafe’s lights, “The Alien” emerged in its “spaceship” in a disposable plastic cup with a lid — bold espresso warped with cream, topped with pistachios that scattered throughout the cold drink like twinkling stars in the cosmos. The first sip hit with pure sweetness and ended with a nutty, roasted finish.

Beside it, an almond croissant with its buttery layers was warm, flaky, and devoured instantly.

Owner Isa Elci, who once managed six Starbucks locations and now runs Grover’s Mill Coffee House with a noncorporate but indie outlook, sees “The Alien” as more than just a drink.

He says, “I think The Alien is the most unique item on the menu, and it stands out because it is what shapes Grover’s Mill’s brand and how it got its start.” He gazes towards the menu as if it were an ancient artifact, part of its history.

Local West Windsor resident Noishe Barnes sipped a seasonal lavender mint latte nestled in the corner of the cafe on a big brown leather sofa.

“The drink was very minty to my liking, but the lavender balances it out,” Barnes said.

Lynn Neal, originally from Burlington, New Jersey, but now a regular at Grover’s Mill, says, “It’s important to give independent businesses attention, as the chain-based coffee places aren’t warming at all. I don’t even go to Starbucks anymore since I started going here.”

Mercer County resident Gary Neal says he comes in for more than the caffeine and scones.

“I look forward to the open mic nights that happen every other Thursday just to get my fix of music,” Neal says.

Grover’s Mill Coffee House delivers more than just a cup of joe and a Danish; it offers character and community.

With its intergalactic alien invasion theme, indie movie vibes, handcrafted drinks, and various pastries, it stands out from typical chain shops in every way.

It is a place where locals gather, stories and a love for the arts are shared, and the atmosphere feels just right and comfortable.

All in all, it is definitely worth the visit.
