Jeremiah Sanchez drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of ninth inning, scoring Noah Borrero with what proved to be the game-winning run as 16th-seeded South River defeated top-seeded Woodbridge, 2-1, in the first round of the GMC Tournament in Woodbridge.

James Zsorey went 8.2 innings, allowing an unearned run on seven hits, three hit by pitches and a walk with four strikeouts. Zsorey hit the state mandated pitch count limit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Reliever Brandon Lell gave up a single go Gavin Silcner, putting runners on the corners, but Lell induced a groundball for the game’s final out.

Borrero, who went 2-for-3, gave South River (14-5) a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a bases loaded walk that scored Sanchez.

Woodbridge (13-5) tied the game in the bottom of the third inning when Slicner scored on a South River error.

Bryant Perreira was 2-for-2 with a walk and a hit by pitch, while Bryan German went 2-for-4 in defeat for Woodbridge. Kevin Arroyo started and struck out eight in 7.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks.

South River plays eighth-seeded Spotswood in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at North Brunswick Community Park.

A lineup featuring 9/11 survivors who nearly escaped the tragedy will tell their first-hand accounts this Sunday, May 4th, aimed at educating students and young adults at VFW Post 1451 in South River, NJ.

South River, NJ: Anyone old enough to remember September 11th, 2001 knows exactly what they were doing that day.

That Tuesday morning in the New York metro area started just like any other. It was a picturesque morning with a perfect temperature and bright beautiful skies with friendly chunks of clouds hovering high in the sky that posed no threat of rain.

But everyone in their mid-twenties today has little to no recollection of that day. And everyone under that age group wasn’t even alive yet - a large segment of the American population.

Loyalty Day

The New Jersey Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) hold an annual ceremony around this time of year called Loyalty Day. [tickets HERE]

Loyalty Day is observed on May 1st in the United States. It was proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as a day for declaring loyalty to the United States of America and to acknowledge American history.

The VFW has come to the realization that the tragic events that occurred on 9/11 are now considered American history. More importantly, we as Americans have always pledged to “never forget” 9/11.

“For our Loyalty Day ceremony, we chose to remember 9/11. Being from the Central Jersey area, it's a day that hits close to home for many of us, especially 9/11 victim families and the veterans who chose to enlist because of 9/11,” Ken Molina, commander of the South River VFW Post 1451, said.

He added, “We also chose 9/11 as the theme for Loyalty Day because we realized a third of the American population either weren’t alive or simply don’t remember 9/11. That’s a lot of people!”

Ken and his team decided to conduct the ceremony by finding people to retell their 9/11 stories of survival.

And what a lineup it is.

“We found survivors who were more than willing to retell their stories of survival and recovery. Police officer Will Jimeno was in the building when the tower collapsed. Mikaila Cruz was on the 95^th floor of the south tower when the plane hit the other building. Firefighter John Larocchia lost a third of his firehouse that day,” Ken said. “And lastly, Navy SEAL Bill Brown faced the same evil the world witnessed that day head-on in continuous battles overseas. We couldn’t be prouder to have them speak at our VFW.”

The VFW members aim to accomplish two goals for Loyalty Day this weekend. The first is to prove their “loyalty” to America by showing patriotism and covering an important American historical event.

The second is to never forget.

“We want to focus on students and young adults who don’t have direct knowledge of 9/11 and invite them to the ceremony so they can hear the stories of survivors firsthand,” Ken said. “Letting them hear these incredible stories of survival and recovery will go a long way in helping them to never forget.”

The event is open to the public and is free of charge. Any donations collected will go towards John Larocchia’s nonprofit organization Laughter Saves Lives which honors those lost on 9/11 and provides comedy shows for the veteran and first responder communities to improve their mental health.

SOUTH RIVER, N.J. — The South River Parks & Recreation Department has postponed its Easter Egg Hunt due to inclement weather, pushing the event to Friday, April 18.

Originally scheduled for April 12 at St. Marks Coptic School on Morningside Avenue, the free community event will now begin at 6:00 p.m. with adjusted group times for children based on age.

According to the updated schedule, children ages 3 and under and those in Pre-K and Kindergarten will begin their hunt at 6:00 p.m. Students in grades 1 and 2 will follow at 6:30 p.m., with grades 3 through 5 starting at 6:45 p.m.

The event remains free and open to the public. Organizers encourage attendees to bring their own Easter baskets.

A banner reading “POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER” was added to the original event flyer, signaling the change.

The egg hunt will still take place at the same location, and officials have not indicated any further delays. No registration is required to participate.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A confrontation on a Brooklyn sidewalk escalated into violence Thursday afternoon when a man struck another with a firearm, causing the weapon to discharge before fleeing the scene, police said.

The incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. in front of 5423 Church Avenue, where an unidentified man approached a 56-year-old male and began arguing with him, according to law enforcement.

During the dispute, the suspect pulled out a firearm and struck the victim on the left side of the head. The blow caused the weapon to discharge, though it was not immediately clear if the bullet hit anything or anyone.

Police said the suspect fled on foot, heading southbound on East 55th Street before turning west onto Church Avenue. The victim sustained minor injuries from the strike but declined medical treatment at the scene.

Authorities are seeking a male with a dark complexion who was last seen wearing a black jacket, gray jeans, and red sneakers.

The motive for the dispute remains unclear, and no arrests have been made. Police have not released surveillance footage or further identifying details as the investigation continues.

LAHASKA, PA — The 44th annual Strawberry Festival at Peddler’s Village is set to take place on May 3 and 4, drawing thousands to Bucks County for a two-day celebration filled with strawberry-themed treats, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities.

Running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, the festival will feature fresh-baked strawberry pies, strawberry shortcake donuts, and other themed desserts like strawberry chocolate chip cannolis and scones. Visitors can also enjoy live music, kids’ activities, food trucks, and games. Admission is free, though food, drinks, and select activities will be pay-as-you-go.

A pie-eating contest for both adults and children will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with registration beginning at 11:00 a.m. New this year is The Great Strawberry Strut, a costume contest inviting guests to don strawberry-themed outfits on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a chance to win prizes and a $100 gift card.

Shops throughout the village will remain open until 8 p.m. on Saturday, and VIP packages offering premier parking and festival perks are available for purchase in advance. House-baked strawberry streusel pies can be pre-ordered online or bought at the festival while supplies last.

“This is the kickoff to the festival season,” Peddler’s Village said in an announcement, highlighting the long-standing tradition that draws visitors from across the region.

In addition to the Strawberry Festival, Peddler’s Village will host several spring and summer events, including the Best of the Nest birdhouse competition from April 28 to June 8 and a Mother’s Day buffet on May 11. A Safari in Sand exhibit featuring ten large-scale sand sculptures will launch June 1, with sculpting beginning mid-May.
