NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Mark your calendars. Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers will be opening in North Brunswick in June, the company announced.
The fast-food chain is known for its cooked-to-order steakburgers and custard. They will be opening their restaurant at 2418 Route 1, North Brunswick. An opening date is yet to be announced.
The leading signature item on Freddy’s menu is the Original Double Steakburger. Every steakburger is cooked-to-order and served sizzling hot. Customers can request their own choice of toppings, sauce or dressings, and the kitchen will personalize an “off the-menu” special.
Other mouthwatering steakburgers on the menu include the Original Bacon & Cheese, Jalapeño Pepper Jack Double, California-Style Double (with Thousand Island, onion, lettuce & tomato), and the new Prime Rib Steakburger (with thin-sliced prime rib stacked on two steakburger patties, melted Swiss cheese, grilled onions, sauteed portobello mushrooms and garlic aioli).
There’s also an Original Patty Melt on rye with Swiss and grilled onion, and a Veggie Burger. Chicken Tenders and Chicken sandwiches are also on the menu, which includes Spicy, Crispy or a Grilled Chicken Club, as well as all-beef Hot Dogs.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – An ordinance that would have allowed construction of approximately 2,700,000 square feet of industrial warehouse or distribution center space was defeated during the last council meeting.
The proposed development was planned for a 176-acre area along Ridge Road and Perrine Road. Initially, this property had been included in the township's Affordable Housing Plan for rezoning to accommodate 1,320 residential units, including 264 affordable housing units.
In 2022, however, developer Ridge Road Properties and the township agreed to switch to building warehouses instead. A fairness hearing on December 16, 2024, saw a judge rule in favor of this agreement, which included an $8 million contribution by the developer to the township's Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
The defeated ordinance would have created a LI-5 Light Industrial district, enabling the construction of a warehouse or data center. The township's Planning Board had previously voted against the ordinance before it was sent to the council.
At the April 16 meeting, residents from Ridge Road and surrounding neighborhoods attended in large numbers as the council prepared to vote.

"Warehouses near schools, surrounded by residential area and without proper infrastructure, should not be approved," said resident Tarun Patel. "Yes, the township has housing obligations. Yes, it wants commercial tax revenue. But we cannot allow ourselves to be forced into a decision that sacrifices our neighborhood, our infrastructure, and our health in the name of compromise."
Mayor Charlie Carley acknowledged residents' concerns and mentioned ongoing litigation related to affordable housing across town. He discussed efforts to mitigate traffic impacts through developer-funded road improvements, emphasizing the need to avoid congestion near a high school and downtown Monmouth Junction.
Resident Kevin Moran argued that rezoning contradicted the township's Master Plan: "When you look at the 2001 Master Plan, commercial uses should not be scattered, but located at consolidated places so circulation and public transportation can be effectively provided. There's no way it makes sense to stick an industrial park in an area that's surrounded completely by a residential area."
The attorney for Ridge Road Properties spoke in favor of passing the ordinance, calling the process "transparent" and noting the court's decision deemed the agreement "fair."
“When the court held hearings in December in New Brunswick, many of the residents that spoke tonight were at that meeting. Many residents expressed their concerns with respect to the project, and ultimately, the judge determined, in the context of affordable housing, that the Settlement Agreement was fair and reasonable,” the attorney said.
During the final vote, Councilwoman Patricia Germain voted "no," citing her personal experience having a warehouse in her backyard. Councilwoman Archana Grover also voted "no," stating, "I live on Henderson Road, and I do not want a warehouse in my backyard."
Mayor Carley voted "yes," explaining, "I've been one of the authors of this, and so I have to own up to it." Councilman Kenneth Bierman recused himself.
The ordinance was ultimately defeated by a 2-1 vote.

Jawad Aslam lost his second singles match to the Raiders' Pavan Patel, 6-1, 6-4, and Christopher Cardinale-Marotta lost his third singles match to Arnav Dogra. In the first set, Cardinale-Marotta and Dogra battled to a 6-6 tie, forcing a tiebreaker. Cardinale-Marotta won the tiebreaker 7-0 to take the first set. Dogra bounced back to take the second set 6-4. The pair played a tiebreaker to decide the match. Dogra won the tiebreaker 10-4. The first doubles match between South Plainfield's Tony Ho and Alvin Nguyen and Juan Marizaca and Krupesh Thakkar was another back-and-forth match. Marizaca and Thakker won the first set 7-5. Ho and Nguyen came back to win the second set 6-3, but lost the tiebreaker to decide the match 11-9.
The loss dropped the Tigers' overall season record to 6-2 and ended a five-game win streak that started after South Plainfield's only other loss of the season to Piscataway High School. Next up for the Tigers is the Greater Middlesex Conference Tennis Tournament on Monday at Hamilton Memorial Veterans Park in Hamilton Township. Matches begin at 9 a.m.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Four residents have gone to court to overturn the township's redevelopment plan for the former Princeton Nurseries site along Route 1, Ridge and Mapleton roads.
The three lawsuits have been consolidated into one case before Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Christopher Rafano who has scheduled a case management conference for April 2.
The three lawsuits against the township and WRV Nurseries South Brunswick LLC were filed last year by Cynthia Payne, Stephen Elston and Mark and Katherine Smith.
The lawsuit seeks to have the ordinance approving the redevelopment plan invalidated.
In addition, the lawsuit asks the court to rule that the township's Planning Board's finding that the redevelopment plan is consistent with the Master Plan was "arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable."
The approximately 160-acre site is in the southwestern corner of the township next to the Plainsboro border. It's one of the largest undeveloped parcels with Route 1 frontage.
The lawsuit alleges the Planning Board's review of the redevelopment plan was "procedurally and substantively flawed" and the redevelopment ordinance adopted by the township is 'illegal.'"
The site was designated as a non-condemnation area in need of redevelopment by the Township Council on April 3, 2024. The ordinance approving the Princeton Nurseries Redevelopment Plan was approved by the Township Council on Aug. 7, 2024.
The lawsuit alleges that on announcing the review as an agenda item at a Planning Board meeting, a motion to approve was immediately made.
"There was no substantive discussion," the lawsuit alleges. "A review of the record reveals the Board appeared unclear of the reason the governing body referred the proposed ordinance to it or for that matter, what exactly was the purpose of the vote that was being taken."
In addition, there was no time for public testimony, the lawsuit alleges.
The lawsuit also alleges that the redevelopment plan is illegal because it is inconsistent with the Master Plan.
The suit contends the redevelopment is illegal because it is "spot zoning designed and intended to favor the developer by evading the ordinary zoning or rezoning process."
The township has denied the allegations.
The township Planning Board is considering a proposal by WRV Nurseries South Brunswick Owner to build an approximately 340,985-square-foot data center at 4405 Route 1, part of the former Princeton Nurseries site.
The township Planning Board has held public hearings on the proposal since December.
The next hearing is scheduled for March 26.
