The new form online now states:

Complete this section only if you answered “yes” at line 5a

For those answering “No” on line 5A, they are ineligible to file the application and do not need to complete Schedule III. Line 5A is for those that were not residing in the same home for the full year (based on answer at line 4a). By indicating “No” on 5a, the applicant is additionally saying that they were not an owner or renter on October 1, 2024.

By indicating that they were not residing in the same home all year (Line 4a) and neither a homeowner or renter (Line 5a), the applicant would not be eligible for any of the programs: Senior Freeze, ANCHOR, or Stay NJ.

However, there was a printing error on Schedule III itself. Schedule III of the PAS-1 booklets that are being mailed to applicants incorrectly indicates that you should only complete the schedule if you moved before December 31. However, Schedule III should be completed by those who indicated “Yes” online 5a even if they DID move by December 31.

When I head to the supermarket these days, it's hard to ignore the reality that I’m often getting less, but paying more.

We’re all feeling the pinch, and it’s particularly noticeable when we are preparing meals for our families. No question; the groceries don’t go as far as they used to.

In fact, the cost of eating at home jumped another 3.3% from last March to this March. And it’s not just groceries; even dining out offers little relief, as our local restaurant owners are also navigating the same challenges. Prices of eggs, meat, poultry and fish went up 8.9% over those same 12 months, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In an effort to manage our household budgets, it might be tempting to think of farmers markets as an unaffordable luxury. It is understandable to assume that fresh, locally-sourced produce must be more expensive than items mass sold in supermarkets. But with the impact of stubborn inflation, the price gap between the two has narrowed considerably. In many cases, you might be surprised at how comparable the costs have become.

That’s why I’m urging you to experience the Scotch Plains Farmers Market. Tomorrow, Saturday, May 3, we’ll be celebrating the opening of our 33rd season! You’ll find a wonderful array of fresh produce, delectable baked goods, and unique local finds. As always, the market will be located in our municipal parking lot at 430 Park Ave., open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Scotch Plains holds a special place in New Jersey’s farmers’ market history. Back in 1992, we were among the very first towns in the state to establish one. It’s been gratifying to see so many of our neighboring communities, as well as those we visit down the Shore, follow our lead over the years. There’s no doubt in my mind that these local markets offer tremendous benefits for our health, our local economy, and our environment. Plus, they serve as terrific gathering places for our community.

Like many of you, I eagerly anticipate Saturday mornings when I can bring my dog to the farmers’ market. It’s a chance to catch up with friends and see what new and seasonal items our loyal vendors have to offer each week. We’re incredibly proud to host hundreds of our township residents, as well as visitors from surrounding communities, at our weekly event, which runs annually until the first frosts of November.

The Scotch Plains Farmers’ Market has truly become a popular destination, celebrating more than three decades of “Jersey Fresh.” The Scotch Plains Business & Professional Association does a fantastic job of managing it all.

Another significant advantage of our farmers’ market is the unparalleled freshness of the produce. Fruits and vegetables often go from a local Jersey farm to our tables in Scotch Plains within 24 hours. Grown locally and in season, the products are harvested at their peak ripeness, retaining plenty of vitamins and minerals.

Our vendors are passionate about what they do and are always happy to share tips, perhaps even on how to grow your own perfect Jersey produce. For them, our Saturday morning tradition serves as a vital economic incubator, allowing these small business owners to retain a large share of their earnings and directly connect with all of us.

Launched in 2018 by Gov. Phil Murphy and the New Jersey State Legislature, RevolutionNJ seeks to plan, encourage, and coordinate the nationwide commemoration of this historic anniversary. Scotch Plains fully supports RevolutionNJ’s mission to promote history’s role in public discourse, education, tourism, community engagement, and scholarship across the state.

Through engaging events and ceremonies, we aim to create memorable experiences that enable Scotch Plains residents to connect with history, see their place within the American story, and appreciate how the ideals and events of the Revolution continue to shape our lives today.

Planned Activities

While we are still in the early phases of planning for 2026, we are excited about the array of activities on the horizon. On the weekend of June 26 and June 27, 2026, Scotch Plains will host its Revolution 250 Celebration honoring our nation's 250th anniversary! Friday, June 26 will include plenty of festivities, food, and family fun in downtown Scotch Plains, culminating in the unveiling of a time capsule. On Saturday, June 27, there will be an exciting fireworks display held at Shady Rest Country Club.

We welcome historical reenactors to participate in the weekend's various events. Scotch Plains: A Brief History

Scotch Plains has a rich 300-year history dating back to its settlement in 1684. Originally inhabited by the Raritan tribe of the Lenni Lenape, the area saw European exploration beginning with Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524, followed by Dutch claims in 1609. The name "Scotch Plains" was adopted in the 1680s, reflecting the settlement of Scottish immigrants under George Scot.

The township played a significant role during the American Revolutionary War, with several historical landmarks still standing today. Notable sites include the Stage House Inn, which served as a tavern and gathering place for colonial leaders, and the Osborn-Cannonball House, which bore the marks of battle as colonial troops faced the British during the Battle of Short Hills.

The arrival of the railroad in the 1830s marked a turning point, facilitating growth and attracting commuters and vacationers. By the early 20th century, Scotch Plains had evolved into a modern suburban community, with an influx of Italian immigrants bringing new skills and enriching the local culture. The township officially adopted its historical name again in 1917 after a brief period of division with the neighboring Fanwood Borough. The post-World War II era saw rapid development, leading to the construction of new schools and residential neighborhoods to accommodate a burgeoning population.

Today, Scotch Plains boasts a diverse population of nearly 25,000 residents, a thriving business community, and a wealth of recreational opportunities. The township's many historic sites continue to attract visitors, celebrating a unique history that intertwines with the broader narrative of American independence. With its modern amenities and rich cultural heritage, Scotch Plains remains a vibrant and welcoming community.

Official RevolutionNJ Resolution

In Scotch Plains, freecycling has emerged as a powerful tool for community building and waste reduction.

Every year, we hold a special freecycling event that is free and open to the public. We gather to give away items that are no longer needed or wanted, rather than discarding them in the trash. This simple act has far-reaching benefits, contributing to a litter-free town and more conscious consumption habits.

This year, the event will be held Saturday, April 26, as part of Scotch Plains’ Earth Day celebration. It begins with a community clean up, set for 8 a.m. Anyone who wants to volunteer to pick up litter and debris can register here.

Then, join us for the Freecycle Market at 10:30 a.m. where people can donate and “shop” for free items at Jerseyland Park, 2354 Beryllium Road, until 12:30 p.m. (Rain date is April 27.)

Scotch Plains residents who want to donate items must sign up on Community Pass to secure a drop-off time, set between 8:30-10 a.m. Space is limited; register here. Registration is open until April 24, but might close sooner if all slots are filled.

We require that all items are pre-sorted into various categories, in boxes and in working order. Accepted items include toys, puzzles/games, seasonal décor, small appliances, kitchen ware (but no glass), sports equipment and DVD/video games.

Books will not be accepted, but please remember the Friends of the Scotch Plains Library will begin collecting donations on June 20. The Freecycle Market also does not accept any glass, clothing, shoes, electronics or bikes.

When we discard unwanted items, they often end up in landfills, where they decompose slowly, releasing harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Freecycling, on the other hand, extends the lifespan of these items, reducing the need for new production and the associated environmental costs.

Manufacturing new goods requires significant energy, water, and raw materials, all of which contribute to environmental degradation. By reusing and repurposing existing items, freecycling minimizes this impact and promotes a circular economy where resources are valued and waste is minimized in Scotch Plains.

Beyond its environmental benefits, our annual freecycling event provides another great opportunity for us all to interact, share resources, and build relationships. At the event, residents are eager to share stories, offer advice and often find some other items to swap.

When people are aware that their unwanted items can find a new home, they may be more thoughtful about their purchases. They may be less likely to buy things they don't need and more likely to take care of the items they already own.

The hope is this shift in mindset can lead to a more sustainable lifestyle, where residents prioritize quality over quantity and value the resources that go into producing goods. Freecycling can also be a powerful tool for teaching our children about the importance of sustainability and resourcefulness. By involving them in the process of giving away and receiving items, parents can instill valuable lessons about reducing waste and caring for the environment.

I hope you will see freecycling as more than an easy way to clean out the basement of unwanted stuff. Join us in making a tangible difference and contributing to a healthier community for future generations.

As part of this effort to make Scotch Plains more innovative and sustainable, we have found yet another way to divert waste from quickly-filling landfills.

Scotch Plains is partnering with other Union County communities to conveniently collect used clothing and other items. A drop-off bin is now available at the DPW Yard at 2445 Plainfield Ave. on Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Please call (908) 233-6707 with any questions.)

The accepted items – which includes clothing, shoes, accessories, and household linens – are then given to Helpsy, a sustainable clothing and textile recycling company. All items are repurposed for resale, reuse, and recycling. This maximizes the lifespan of these materials, reducing the demand for new clothing production and minimizing the associated environmental costs.

Scotch Plains, and our very active Green Team, is eager to spread the word about textile recycling, freecycling, litter clean-ups and any other way we can prioritize resource conservation and waste reduction in our town.

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ – Marc Fabiano, a health and physical education teacher and varsity wrestling coach at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, has made the semifinals in the America’s Favorite Teachercompetition. Voting in the semi-final round ends Thursday, April 24 at 10 p.m. EDT.

Fabiano, a 2005 SPFHS grad, has worked in the district for 14 years and serves as head wrestling coach and assistant football coach. Through teaching, he has seen the impact that teachers can have on students, as well as the impact students can have on teachers.

“While coaching wrestling, I suffered a traumatic brain injury and spent five months in treatment,” Fabiano said. “I feared I’d never teach or coach again, but my students' support—through emails and cards—transformed my mindset. Their kindness turned my sadness into motivation, giving me the strength to push forward. Those students made a lasting difference in my journey.”

The semi-final round of the America’s Favorite Teacher competition will determine which of the eight competitors will advance to the finals. The public is invited to vote once per day for free or to purchase additional votes, with the funds being donated on behalf of Fabiano to the Planetary Society. The final winner will receive $25,000, a feature in Reader's Digest, a trip to Hawaii, and a school assembly with Bill Nye, “The Science Guy.”

“Giving back is deeply important to my family,” Fabiano said. “If I win, I will donate $5,000 to a high school co-worker whose son recently had surgery to remove a brain tumor and is now undergoing chemotherapy. The remaining funds will go toward my two children’s future education expenses.”
