ROXBURY, NJ - The township has thanked the people who volunteered time last month to remove litter throughout Roxbury.

In a statement, Roxbury Clean Communities Coordinator Kellie Ann Keyes said the township wanted “to convey how much it appreciates all the volunteers who put so much effort into cleaning up the town of litter throughout the month of April.”

Keyes said more than two tons of material was removed from 25 places throughout Roxbury.

“An extra special thank you to the many volunteers that support the program year after year,” she said. "Our cleanup efforts over the past few years have shown that the problem is not just litter; rather, it's the deliberate disposal of items that someone no longer needs and wants to get rid of - tires, furniture, bags of concrete, to name a few - or just an area where it's convenient to drop something repeatedly."

She pointed to several groups that “assisted in thoroughly cleaning places where there had been dumping.” These included Reger Road in Succasunna, which was “adopted” for cleanup by the Roxbury High School lacrosse team, and Kings Highway in Landing, where volunteers removed furniture, shopping carts, fuel, auto parts “and tires, so many tires.”

One of Roxbury's newest Adopt-A-Spot participants is Manheim New York Metro Skyline, an international vehicle wholesaler based in Parsippany.

“In an effort to be an example of sustainability in our local communities by taking part in the litter clean-ups,we have removed pounds of trash while also instilling in the next generation the value of sustainability," said Sam Lim, a group coordinator for the company. “Future generations as young as seven years old have been brought along by our employees to assist with the cleanup.”

Keyes said Roxbury Clean Communities will continue to provide messaging about litter abatement and keep leading by example.

“That ‘someone else will pick it up’ is not a true statement,” she said. “The fact that every individual has the responsibility to contribute to the health of our community cannot be overstated. Whether it is in a parking lot or your neighborhood, please take the time to clean up any litter you come across while you are out and about.”

ROXBURY, NJ – The Roxbury Mayor and Council on Tuesday night unanimously adopted a $36.4 million township budget for 2025 that holds the line on municipal taxes, finalizing a plan introduced in late March.

The adopted budget confirms the municipal tax rate will remain at .635 per $100 of assessed valuation, identical to the 2024 rate.

Despite the total spending plan being approximately $3.36 million higher than last year's, township officials balanced the budget without a tax rate increase by including $1.6 million in revenue from the sale of the former township-owned dialysis center property on Righter Road and by applying funds from the township's surplus.

Councilman Jim Rilee voiced his support just before the vote.

"We previously talked about it, but I feel it's a very responsible budget," Rilee said. "It includes no tax increase for this year for the residents on the municipal side. And I'm happy. I think we put together a good work-product along with our staff."

Mayor Shawn Potillo concurred. "I mimic what Councilman Rilee said; it's a responsible budget," Potillo stated. "And you know, a lot of time and energy went into it from all parts, and I thank everybody for the time that's spent on that."

The significant infusion from the dialysis center sale to DaVita Renal Center of Succasunna was highlighted by Potillo when the budget was introduced in March.

"The addition of the $1.6 million in funding contributed to a well-rounded budget that provided a 0% municipal tax increase for the residents and businesses who already face financial pressure from every angle," he said at the time. This marks the fifth time in seven years the council has avoided a municipal tax increase.

The adopted budget funds several key capital improvements and services:

During the March introduction, Councilman Fred Hall acknowledged the financial pressures residents face from other rising costs.

"It’s kind of nice to know we are able to keep these numbers down,” Hall said then. “People really need a little bit of a break from rising costs and I think this is going to help a lot of people out.”

Officials remind residents that the municipal portion accounts for about 25 percent of their total property tax bill which also includes school district, library and county government taxes.

The school district budget, typically representing about 64 percent, is scheduled for a final vote on April 28. The Roxbury School Board, earlier this month, introduced a proposed budget that includes a tax increase that would increase by about 5 percent.

The last topic Greg Trotter ever wants to talk about is himself.

So, when the longtime Roxbury baseball coach was asked about a career milestone that is approaching, the 26-year veteran seemed a bit reticent and surprised.

“I much rather see my other coaches and players get all the attention and credit,” Trotter said. "I don’t put emphasis on wins, losses and milestones. I coach for much bigger reasons. I coach for the kids, their future, and for all the relationships I’ve made over the years.”

Trotter is quickly closing in on another career milestone. Following the Gaels 11-3 home win over Mendham on Thursday, he moved within 8 wins of becoming the fifth baseball coach to win at least 400 games in Morris County history.

Trotter’s career record stands at 392-269 heading into Friday’s game at Bridgewater-Raritan.

The Gaels, No. 2 in the latest Morris/Sussex Top 10 rankings, are 4-1 overall this season.

Trotter credits past assistant coaches Dan Wydner, Brian Eberly, Josh Ury, Kevin Murray and Matt Scheneck for his success, as well as current assistants Josh Boyd and Rob Kral.

“I don’t think I would change anything. I’m lucky to have been here this long,” Trotter said. “I’ve been surrounded by a great administration, assistant coaches, families and athletes.”

How it started

A Morris County native, Trotter was a multi-sport athlete at Mount Olive High School.

He grew up around baseball, watching his father, Joe Trotter, also an educator and coach, coach the Clifton Dodgers and Hackensack Troasts of the Bergen County-based Metropolitan League during the summer months.

“I learned a lot about the game and how to coach players,” Trotter said. “Those were great years and I was surrounded by talented athletes. I learned valuable lessons.”

Trotter played college baseball at Rowan, where he met his wife Kelly, a field hockey player at the Division III school.

“Kelly understands athletics and how much time you need to put in to get things right,” he said.

After college, Trotter spent a year coaching at Rowan before landing a teaching job at Roxbury in 1998. He took over the baseball program in 2000.

Trotter’s Roxbury teams have won three Morris County Tournament titles (2011, 2014, 2015) and four sectional crowns (2001, 2014, 2018, 2019). The 2014 team reached the Group 4 state title game, falling to Jackson Memorial.

Joining elite company

Trotter will soon join an elite fraternity of Morris County coaches to win at least 400 games.

Top on the list is Harry Shatel, who won 752 games at Morristown, good for sixth all-time in state history.

Current Morristown Beard coach John Sheppard sits at 479 wins, Current Delbarton coach Bruce Shatel, a former Roxbury coach, has 432 total victories. Former Pequannock coach Ed Rogers closed his career with 433 wins.

“I always want to win championships. I’m lucky to have won a few over the years,” Trotter said. “I ask a lot from my athletes and they know what to expect. They know how demanding I can be.

“I’ve been doing this for a while and I've been lucky to have had some great players. I'm looking forward to winning more games and hopefully more championships.”

Abbie Rattay scored four goals and added two assists as Roxbury defeated Old Tappan, 10-9, in the first round of the North Jersey, Group 2 tournament in Roxbury.

Roxbury (10-9) staged an impressive comeback after trailing 5-0 at halftime, scoring all 10 of its goals in the second half to secure its first state tournament victory since 2019.

Brooke Franetovich was instrumental in the Gaels’ comeback, contributing two goals and a game-high five assists for seven points. Rattay dominated the draw controls with nine, helping Roxbury gain crucial possessions during its second-half surge.

The Gaels scored five goals in both the third and fourth quarters to overcome the early deficit. Isabel Mango recorded eight saves in goal for Roxbury.

Old Tappan (12-4) was led by Charlotte Malady, who finished with three goals and three assists for a team-high six points. Mia Derrico added three goals and one assist, while Tea Kisala contributed one goal along with five ground balls and four draw controls.

The eighth-seeded Gaels will now advance to face top-seeded Mendham in the quarterfinals.

ROXBURY, NJ - Friends of the Roxbury Public Library recently introduced a travel initiative called “Adventures!”

A bus trip to the beautiful Grounds for Sculptures is scheduled for June. Then, in August, there will be a barbeque picnic at the Somerset Patriots game, said the non-profit organization.

“Grounds for Sculptures, in Hamilton, is a majestic park overflowing with magnificent art, sculptures and gardens, and is rated one of the best places to visit in New Jersey,” said the Friends. “A bus will leave from Horseshoe Lake on the morning of June 25 and return there in the evening.”

The price includes transportation and entrance to the Grounds. Seats are limited.

The barbeque picnic at the ballpark is scheduled for Aug. 6, when the Somerset Patriots will play the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. “An unlimited buffet will be available before and during the beginning of the evening game while we watch Darryl Strawberry throw out the first pitch,” said the Friends.
