DUI Lawyers in North Arlington, NJ

New Jersey has some of the toughest laws in the country regarding drunk driving, specifically driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving under the influence (DUI). Notably, there's a strict prohibition against plea bargaining to reduce DWI charges. A first-time conviction for drunk driving can result in hefty fines, a possible jail sentence of up to 30 days, and a 90-day suspension of your driving privileges, not to mention additional financial repercussions that can linger.

If you find yourself arrested for driving under the influence, prepare for mandatory license suspension, the potential for jail time, and a staggering minimum of $6,575 in fines and surcharges if convicted. If your insurance company catches wind of the conviction, you may have to pay significant premium increases over the next three years

The truth is that New Jersey's courts are notoriously harsh on people arrested for DUI and DWI. The penalties are substantial and can have a lasting impact on your freedom, work, and life as a whole. Fortunately, working with a quality DUI lawyer - like Edward G. Appel - can help prevent serious charges from going on your permanent record.

DUI Field Sobriety and BAC Tests in New Jersey

Authorities use several types of tests to ascertain whether a driver is under the influence. These tests consist of field sobriety tests, breath analysis, and blood examinations. However, the outcomes of these evaluations can sometimes be misleading. Edward G. Appel has the expertise to recognize and demonstrate the inaccuracies in these results to protect your freedom.

What Happens After You're Arrested for a DUI in New Jersey?

Most people feel anxious and frightened after getting arrested for DWI because they are uncertain about what comes next. That's why it's so important to understand what to anticipate following a DUI arrest - so you can prepare yourself. The initial step in the legal process is the arraignment, which is a court session that occurs soon after your DUI arrest. At this session, the judge will outline the charges that have been brought against you and give you a summary of the penalties you might face. A significant number of traffic cases are settled with plea agreements, but prosecutors are prohibited from providing these arrangements in DUI cases.

That means you have two options: You can plead guilty and face the full penalties of a DUI conviction, or you can plead not guilty and continue to fight for your rights. There is a chance that your charges could be dropped before the trial, but this usually occurs only if there are significant weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence. The judge in your case will decide the outcome after both parties have presented their evidence. Instead of going through this complicated legal process by yourself, call a New Jersey DUI lawyer like Edward G. Appel. It could mean the difference between years of hardship and a clean record.

Understanding DUI Charges in New Jersey: Criminal vs. Traffic Offenses

In New Jersey, driving under the influence (DUI) is categorized as a traffic violation, though the consequences of DUI charges are severe. However, a license suspension is not mandatory for all offenders. First-time offenders arrested with a blood alcohol content (BAC) level under 0.15% may avoid suspension if they quickly install an ignition interlock device (IID) in their personal vehicle. Other potential penalties associated with a DUI conviction can include community service, fines, and, in certain situations, imprisonment. Depending on the circumstances of your case, working with experienced DUI attorneys in North Arlington, NJ, can help you avoid some or all of these punishments.

You may also be charged with DUI if you operate a vehicle while under the influence of any intoxicating substances, regardless of whether they are illegal, prescribed, or available over the counter. The specific type of drug is irrelevant; what matters is your impairment and inability to drive safely.

If convicted of a drug-related DUI, you could face:

  • A license suspension of 7 to 12 months
  • Up to 30 days of incarceration
  • Fines and surcharges exceeding $3,500

A second conviction may result in a jail sentence ranging from 2 to 90 days and a 2-year suspension of your driver's license, along with increased fines and surcharges.

Here's What to Expect After Your 1st DUI Charge in New Jersey

Many individuals charged with DUI believe that they will receive leniency if it's their first offense, but this is not always true. First-time offenders may incur significant fines, up to 30 days of incarceration, and the compulsory installation of an ignition interlock device (IID) in their vehicle. Penalties increase for first-time offenders with a BAC of 0.10% or more at the time of arrest.

As mentioned above, these individuals face a longer mandatory IID installation period, larger fines, and the potential for jail time. First-time offenders will also experience a rise in their auto insurance premiums after their arrest. The State of New Jersey takes DUI offenses seriously, even for those encountering it for the first time.

Here's What to Expect After Your 2nd DUI Charge in New Jersey

Defendants who are charged again within 10 years of a prior conviction face increased penalties for a second DUI offense. They may be fined up to $1,000 and must serve at least 48 hours in jail, with a maximum of 90 days. Additionally, a second conviction can lead to 30 days of community service, a one-to-two-year license suspension, and two to four years of mandatory ignition interlock device (IID) use. These consequences, along with higher insurance rates, can significantly affect a repeat offender's life.

Here's What to Expect After Your 3rd DUI Charge in New Jersey

The court has the authority to impose stringent penalties on individuals with two or more DUI convictions within the past decade. If a person is found guilty of DUI for the third time in a 10- year span, the court may sentence them to 180 days in jail along with a $1,000 fine. Those convicted for the third time will lose their driving licenses for a duration of 8 years.

The court may also require these offenders to install an ignition interlock device for a period of two to four years after their driving rights are reinstated. Because third-time offenders are categorized as high-risk drivers, they will likely face significantly increased auto insurance rates. These individuals should anticipate an extra $1,500 surcharge on their auto insurance each year for three consecutive years. Given that these penalties can have a serious impact on both personal and professional aspects of life, it is crucial to contest the charges with help from a skilled DUI attorney like Edward G. Appel.

How Do DUI Lawyers in North Arlington, NJ, Help with DUI Cases?

Hiring a well-respected DUI lawyer often has a major impact on your case's outcome. Great attorneys will get started immediately by taking a deep dive into the particulars of your case. They'll look for issues with the prosecution's evidence, such as:

  • Did on-scene officers follow protocol when storing samples and administering chemical tests?
  • Did officers have a valid reason for pulling you over to begin with?
  • Are the results from your chemical tests reliable?

If not, a lawyer can expose these concerns, potentially resulting in the dismissal of the charges. These are just a few examples of how an attorney can challenge DUI charges for you.

In fact, our clients benefit from personalized attention, support, and a meticulously crafted defense that aligns with the specific details of their arrest. While no attorney can promise specific outcomes, we assure you that we will continue to advocate for you until you decide otherwise. We examine every detail of your case to ensure all necessary evidence is gathered and the right motions are submitted. There are motions available to suppress evidence if your constitutional rights were infringed upon during the stop, as well as motions to limit or dismiss evidence under particular conditions. Contact us today to evaluate your case. We are eager to help you, even if it's just to provide an initial consultation.

15 Best North Jersey Diners

New Jersey is the diner capital of the world. You can add that to the list of things we are the best at, along with bagels and pizza. You can hardly drive more than 10 minutes anywhere within the state without seeing a classic Jersey diner. Bright lights, a ton of stainless steel and a neon sign that reads “Open 24 hours” (though that tends to be a lie these days). Diners are a place to go when you don’t know what you want. Breakfast food, Greek specialties, full dinners, burgers—you name it, and a NJ diner usually has you covered.

In North Jersey, the concentration of diners increases tenfold. Every other block is seemingly fitted with its own diner and they all have their regulars for good reason. We compiled a list of some of the most iconic spots to make it easier for you. These are 15 of the best diners in North Jersey.

“Surprise!” said no one. Tops Diner is a crucial part of the network of NJ diners. It is large, serves thousands of people a day and everything, yes, everything, is good. Since the 1920s, Tops has been serving the greater Newark area with diner classics, but it was in the 70s when George Golemis bought the spot and changed it for good. It instantly became one of the country’s best diners. George passed in 2020, and today, his sons Van, Jimmy and John run the show. That same year, Tops was torn down and rebuilt to be bigger and better than it ever was. It paid off. Tops Diner remains a local legend. Fried chicken, stacked breakfast platters, omelets and plenty of desserts are just some of what makes Tops so great.

Chit Chat Diner is easily one of the go-to spots in North Jersey. The quirky diner, complete with whimsical colors and an Alice-in-Wonderland-esque design, is a favorite amongst New Jerseyans for its wide array of cultural foods. From tacos and Half chickens to Cuban burgers and lomo saltado, there isn’t much you won’t find at Chit Chat Diner. Bonus points: The Hackensack location is open 24 hours.

When you think of the word diner, an image quite similar to Summit Diner probably comes to mind. Its picture should accompany the dictionary definition, to be honest. This is your classic, small-town, counter-service diner and its design has hardly changed in all of the years it’s been open. Red-backed booths, and wood detailing decorate the inside, while the outside is complete with a green and white facade and a shiny metal roof. The food is as classic as it gets—bringing pancakes, sandwiches and comforting dinners to the table. As far as the atmosphere goes, you’d be hard-pressed to find a diner with a better one.

Located right off of Route 3 in Clifton, NJ, Tick Tock has always been a popular diner and while it certainly didn’t need the added fame, its appearance on a 2008 episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives certainly didn’t hurt. Open since 1948, the diner has seen one major renovation in that time, but has kept its art-deco design close to heart. Stop into the red-lit diner—glowing with neon—for pancakes, waffles, burgers and chops—you won’t be disappointed.

I like to play a game at Allwood Diner, where I order something different each time. I have yet to be disappointed. That’s because everything Allwood dishes out is good—really good. From obvious choices like disco fries and Taylor Ham, egg and cheese to Greek specialties like baked moussaka and gyro platters, Allwood puts their all into everything. And though i prefer to try something new each time I go, when it comes to dessert, there’s only one option: The cheesecake.

A large sign, with an arrow pointing down, reads “World Famous Cheesecake.” If the sign was meant to make me crave cheesecake every time I drive past, then mission accomplished. I can hardly drive my car within a mile of Arlington Diner without stopping in for a slice. And while it’s true that Arlington Diner is most famous for their legendary cheesecake, the rest of the menu is far from disappointing. You’ll find all of the diner classics here and then some—burgers, thick-cut onions rings and open-faced sandwiches await. Obviously, dessert is a must.

If you have the displeasure of being a New York Mets fan like myself, then you might be familiar with Jackson Hole in Flushing, Queens—the over-the-top diner is hard to miss. But, did you know there is another Jackson Hole right here in Englewood, NJ? The menu ranges from omelets to steak platters, but the burgers are where it’s at. The 7-ounce patties are griddled to temperature and served a variety of ways.

Another diner with a classic facade sits on Orient Way in Lyndhurst, NJ. At night, the old-school building shines with neon red script, reading the diner’s name. Inside you’ll find leather booths and swiveling stools at a retro counter. If you are looking for a true time portal into the past, then The Colonial Diner is your place.

Sparta Classic Diner is a standout in Sussex County. The menu packs flavor and fun, from stacked breakfast platters to loaded burgers that don’t skimp. Portions are generous, and desserts get playful with over-the-top shakes like Cookie Monster and S’mores. The space is bright and modern, and the staff keeps things running smooth, even when the place is packed.

Broadway Diner claims that they have the World’s best pancakes and want to know what? They might be right. The buttermilk pancakes come golden brown and stacked high, with a variety of toppings and fillings available. Beyond pancakes, Broadway Diner boasts French toast, Black Angus burgers and banana splits. The original is in Bayonne, with an additional Bayonne spot deemed “The Broadway Bistro & Diner” and a Summit, NJ location.

Roxbury Diner is the kind of spot every town needs. It’s spacious, always buzzing, and filled with the familiar sounds of forks tapping plates and steady conversation. Booths stretch along the windows, and the menu covers all the diner basics—eggs, burgers, sandwiches, and more. Pancakes and French toast come fully loaded, and portions are generous across the board. It’s not trying to be trendy—just solid, classic, and exactly what you’d hope for in a local diner.

Gotham City Diner serves up classic diner favorites with a fun twist inspired by its comic book theme. It’s the kind of place where you can dive into fluffy pancakes or the indulgent Boston Cream French Toast for breakfast. Lunch and dinner bring options like cheesesteak egg rolls and Techno fries, plus plenty of delicious burgers and sandwiches. Gotham City Diner is a spot you’ll want to visit again and again.

Randolph Diner has the kind of menu that makes decisions hard—in a good way. One minute you’re eyeing the French toast Napoleon, the next it’s a cheesesteak or a chicken parm sandwich. The portions are big, the food is great, and the milkshakes don’t mess around. It’s clean, comfy and open late, which might be why it’s always buzzing. It’s the kind of spot that hits the mark every time.

Oakland Diner has that tropical feel. Inside, it’s bright and quirky, with colorful murals and a cozy setup of booths and counter seats. The food is exactly what you want from a classic diner—fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The service is friendly and fast, and the portions don’t disappoint. It’s a place where you can relax, enjoy classic diner food, and soak up a cheerful atmosphere that keeps you coming back.

This place has a fresh, modern vibe that’s a nice change from your typical diner. It’s bright and roomy inside, with a delicious case of desserts that’s hard to resist. The staff are always friendly, and the food is consistently good with fast service. It’s a go-to diner in Bergen County that’s reliable and satisfying every time.

The basics:

Interstate Waste Services Inc. celebrated Earth Day with the launch of one of the most advanced recycling centers in the U.S.

During an April 22 ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Teaneck-based provider of solid waste collection, recycling and disposal services said the new, $30 million facility in North Arlington will further its goal of modernizing waste management infrastructure for a more sustainable future.

The site has the capacity to process 215,000 tons of recyclable material annually. It will keep over 1 million cubic yards of waste out of landfills annually. Key features of the Baler Boulevard facility include:

Founded in 1999, IWS offers trash pickup, dumpster rentals and recycling services. It serves business as well as residential customers. The company operates across New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. IWS has more than 1,000 collection vehicles. It also boasts a network of 33 material recovery, transfer and transload facilities, as well as a rail-served solid waste landfill.

Currently, IWS’s waste-by-rail system takes 300 long-haul trucks off the road every day. The move reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 3,200 metric tons annually. IWS said the North Arlington location will build on that impact by increasing material recovery. The site will also provide municipalities and businesses with the necessary infrastructure to meet recycling targets.

Additionally, the opening of the materials recovery facility broadens IWS’s capabilities to receive material beyond New Jersey to the five boroughs of New York, the company said.

‘Ahead of the curve’

Beyond its environmental benefits, the location is creating new jobs and boosting economic activity in the area. IWS also noted the new facility rose on the site of an aging building and that its project revitalized an underutilized.

IWS’ recent acquisitions include:

IWS Chief Executive Officer Michael DiBella stated, “From being one of the first to offer organics collection in New York City to opening a state-of-the-art MRF in the Bronx, IWS has always been ahead of the curve in recycling innovation. This new facility is the next step in that evolution – an investment in advanced technology that improves capture rates, diverts more material from landfills, and delivers real environmental benefits to the communities we serve.”

Jim Anderson, IWS’s director of engineering and project lead for the North Arlington facility, gushed, “Standing in this place, I feel like a kid in a life-size Erector Set.”

“From AI to advanced optics, this is some of the most sophisticated recycling infrastructure in the country. After all the team’s planning and hard work, it’s incredible to see it come to life,” he went on.

Richard Wierer, director of solid waste for the Bergen County Utilities Authority, stressed that sustainability is a “core value here in Bergen County.”

“We’re delighted to have such a facility in our county and look forward to the positive environmental impact it will have for our area,” he said. “Providing additional markets for recyclable material in Bergen County will benefit our municipalities.”

State-of-the-Art Facility Features Award-winning Glass Cleanup System, Expanding Recycling Capabilities

TEANECK, N.J., April 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Interstate Waste Services, Inc. ("IWS"), a leading vertically integrated provider of solid waste collection, recycling and disposal services, today announced the opening of its newest Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in North Arlington, New Jersey. Representing a $30 million investment, the facility is capable of processing 215,000 tons of recyclable material annually.

For 25 years, IWS has been a leader in waste and recycling innovation, adopting and scaling new technologies and infrastructure to improve material recovery and reduce environmental impact. The North Arlington MRF builds on that legacy with an automated Machinex sorting system that includes a wide array of technologies including: AI-powered robotics, Mechanical Ballistic Screening, magnetic separation, optical sorters, air classification, and a dedicated glass clean-up system. The facility will help keep more material out of landfills while supporting the region's ambitious sustainability goals.

"From being one of the first to offer organics collection in New York City to opening a state-of-the-art MRF in the Bronx, IWS has always been ahead of the curve in recycling innovation," said Michael DiBella, chief executive officer of Interstate Waste Services. "This new facility is the next step in that evolution – an investment in advanced technology that improves capture rates, diverts more material from landfills, and delivers real environmental benefits to the communities we serve."

The facility is part of IWS's broader strategy to modernize waste management infrastructure in the tri-state area for a more sustainable future. IWS's waste-by-rail system already takes 300 long-haul trucks off the road every day, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 3,200 metric tons annually. The North Arlington facility builds on that impact by increasing material recovery and providing municipalities and businesses with the necessary infrastructure to meet recycling targets.

"Standing in this place, I feel like a kid in a life-size Erector Set," said Jim Anderson, director of engineering at IWS and project lead for the North Arlington facility. "From AI to advanced optics, this is some of the most sophisticated recycling infrastructure in the country. After all the team's planning and hard work, it's incredible to see it come to life."

"It was a true pleasure collaborating with the IWS team, whose vision, leadership, and commitment to innovation made this facility possible," said Rusty Angel, Area Sales Manager at Machinex. "Seeing this advanced system come to life is rewarding for all involved, and we congratulate IWS on this milestone that will have a lasting impact on the region's recycling infrastructure."

Beyond its environmental benefits, the facility represents an investment in the local economy. Built on the site of an aging building, the project revitalized an underutilized property while creating new jobs and strengthening the region's recycling capabilities.

"Sustainability is a core value here in Bergen County," said Richard Wierer, director of solid waste for the Bergen County Utilities Authority. "We're delighted to have such a facility in our county and look forward to the positive environmental impact it will have for our area. Providing additional markets for recyclable material in Bergen County will benefit our municipalities."

The opening of the North Arlington MRF broadens IWS's capabilities beyond New Jersey. This facility will also receive material from the five boroughs of New York, where IWS subsidiary Action Environmental Services is a top awardee for the new Commercial Waste Zones (CWZ) program. The CWZ program is designed to make waste collection more efficient and sustainable, aligning with IWS's commitment to responsible environmental stewardship.
