MILLVILLE, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A fire spread across six homes in Millville, Cumberland County, Wednesday night, injuring one man and leaving two young sisters dead.
Around 11 p.m., the fire quickly spread from one duplex to another on Fourth Street near Railroad Avenue, then to two neighboring single-family homes. In all, 21 people were displaced and one man was hospitalized. He has non-life-threatening injuries.
Family members said two sisters, ages 9 and 13, never made it out.
The girls' father told NBC10 he alerted his daughters of the fire, then went to get his 2-year-old twins. Only when he got outside did he realize the older girls weren't with him.
Fire Chief John Wettstein said when firefighters arrived, they ran into a problem with the hydrant closest to the house.
“The cap on the fire hydrant was stuck, and as we were working to get the cap off so we could hook up to it, the fire hydrant itself broke,” he said.
He said they connected to another one up the street, but that cost them valuable time. The searing heat damaged one of the fire trucks.
One of the houses collapsed and severed a gas line, which pumped fuel into the fire, Wettstein said.
Diana, who lives across the street, said she knew something wasn’t right because her house suddenly got very hot.
“Intense heat,” she said. “I get up, I come downstairs, and I see my living room was bright yellow. I look out the window and I see fire, fire, fire!”

Heavy white smoke rose from the charred rubble of some of the homes that were destroyed; only their chimneys still stand.
It took more than four hours to get the blaze under control. Mayor Ben Romanik said his heart goes out to the families and all affected.
“I never wish a day on anyone like this here in the City of Millville or in the great state of New Jersey for this to happen. I’m deeply saddened,” Romanik said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. According to preliminary information, the fire chief does not believe there was foul play.

MILLVILLE, N.J. -- One child's body has been recovered, and the search continues for a second child, after a massive fire burned through several homes in Millville, New Jersey.
The search is being described as a recovery mission.
Two children were unaccounted for after a fire erupted in a New Jersey neighborhood. One person has also been taken to the hospital.
ABC Philadelphia affiliate WPVI spoke to a family member who said he is awaiting word about his nieces, who are ages 9 and 13.
Rubble continues to smolder hours after a fire nearly destroyed an entire block in Millville.
Flames spread to a total of six homes, displacing 23 people.
It broke out at around 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
WPVI's drone was above the spot where the fire burned two duplexes down to the foundation and badly damaged two single-family homes.
"Everything's burned to the ground. We have nothing. My daughter has no shoes on her feet. My son has no coat. We have nothing," said Iteaia Broughton, of Millville.
Nearly two dozen people are facing the same reality after narrowly escaping the fast-moving fire.

WPVI has been told that a gas line ruptured, which fed the fire and made it more intense, allowing the flames to jump from house to house.
"Until the South Jersey gas arrived and was able to turn the gas off to all the houses, we did have a gas-fed fire that made it a little bit more difficult," said Chief John Wettstein, with the Millville Fire Department.
Broughton, a mother of three, described how it all happened so quickly.
"I just put my baby on my shoulder and went outside and I grabbed my son. I don't know what happened," Broughton recalled.
Another issue is that the hydrant on the block didn't work when firefighters arrived.
The chief said they had to run 800 feet of hose to the nearest hydrant after the trucks ran out of water.
One resident says he watched his home burn down as crews scrambled to get access to water.
The fire chief said they aren't quite ready to give more details on the two children who are unaccounted for. But did say the adult taken to the hospital is a family member of the children. That person is expected to be OK.
The Red Cross is assisting those displaced.

Two children are unaccounted for after fire tore through six homes and displaced 23 residents in a Cumberland County community overnight.
Fire crews responded to the 300 block of South 4th Street in Millville around 11 p.m. Wednesday and found two houses fully engulfed, according to Millville Fire Chief John Wettstein.
Flames soon spread to a third.
It took firefighters five to six hours to bring the blaze under control, Wettstein said.
Of the 23 residents displaced by the flames, two juveniles remained unaccounted for as of Thursday morning, the chief said.
One resident was taken to a hospital for treatment, but did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, the chief reported. No other injuries were reported.
The Red Cross is arranging for shelter and other needs for the displaced residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Wettstein said.
As of 7 a.m. crews were dousing areas still smoldering and digging through the remains of the two duplexes and two single-family homes destroyed in the blaze.
“We’re wetting down hotspots. I have my fire investigation unit here and we’re starting the origin and cause investigation,” Wettstein said.
Crews encountered water supply issues as they battled the blaze, according to the chief.
“We used all the water we had on the engines to put out the fire and we ran into a water supply problem with the closest hydrant,” he said. They ran 800 feet of hose to a second hydrant and another 600 to 700 feet to a third to keep fighting the flames, he said.
Collapsing structures severed a gas line, which helped feed the flames, the chief reported, but a utility crew responded to shut off the gas.
Video from 6ABC showed crews battling the raging fire.
The flames were so intense that a tower firetruck used to douse the flames was damaged by the heat, blistering paint, cracking the windshield and damaging emergency lights, Wettstein confirmed, noting that the vehicle remained in operation Thursday morning.
“There’s extensive damage to the side of the tower truck. We’re hoping that most of the damage is just cosmetic,” he said.
Crews from Vineland, Rosenhayn, Cedarville, Downe Township, Maurice River Township and the New Jersey Forest Fire Service responded to assist Millville Fire Department.

MILLVILLE — Rescuers have found the body of one of two young sisters missing after a fire burned six homes Thursday morning.
A faulty fire hydrant and a gas main may have contributed to the blaze.
The fire began around 11 p.m. in a home on 4th Street and spread to additional homes on the block, Millville Fire Chief John Wettstein told CBS Philadelphia. At least 23 people were displaced by the fire with two children unaccounted for.
The body of one girl was found amidst the rubble, and authorities were searching for her sister on Thursday afternoon. The girls' father was injured in the blaze and was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. Their names haven't been released.
A member of the girl's family told NBC Philadelphia that two other siblings and their parents escaped the flames.
Holly City Family Success Center on its Facebook page said it is collecting new items for the family Thursday until 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Wettstein said the collapse of two floors inside one of the homes caused a gas line to rupture and feed the fire. Firefighters had to lay 1,000 feet of hose after nearby fire hydrants had issues. About 1,300 gallons of water carried in by fire trucks and from a tower were quickly exhausted, according to the chief.
Red Cross New Jersey said it was already on scene assisting residents with housing, food and clothing.
The flames were so hot that the front of a fire truck melted, the chief said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
