DUI Lawyers in Mansfield, NJ

New Jersey has some of the toughest laws in the country regarding drunk driving, specifically driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving under the influence (DUI). Notably, there's a strict prohibition against plea bargaining to reduce DWI charges. A first-time conviction for drunk driving can result in hefty fines, a possible jail sentence of up to 30 days, and a 90-day suspension of your driving privileges, not to mention additional financial repercussions that can linger.

If you find yourself arrested for driving under the influence, prepare for mandatory license suspension, the potential for jail time, and a staggering minimum of $6,575 in fines and surcharges if convicted. If your insurance company catches wind of the conviction, you may have to pay significant premium increases over the next three years

The truth is that New Jersey's courts are notoriously harsh on people arrested for DUI and DWI. The penalties are substantial and can have a lasting impact on your freedom, work, and life as a whole. Fortunately, working with a quality DUI lawyer - like Edward G. Appel - can help prevent serious charges from going on your permanent record.

DUI Field Sobriety and BAC Tests in New Jersey

Authorities use several types of tests to ascertain whether a driver is under the influence. These tests consist of field sobriety tests, breath analysis, and blood examinations. However, the outcomes of these evaluations can sometimes be misleading. Edward G. Appel has the expertise to recognize and demonstrate the inaccuracies in these results to protect your freedom.

What Happens After You're Arrested for a DUI in New Jersey?

Most people feel anxious and frightened after getting arrested for DWI because they are uncertain about what comes next. That's why it's so important to understand what to anticipate following a DUI arrest - so you can prepare yourself. The initial step in the legal process is the arraignment, which is a court session that occurs soon after your DUI arrest. At this session, the judge will outline the charges that have been brought against you and give you a summary of the penalties you might face. A significant number of traffic cases are settled with plea agreements, but prosecutors are prohibited from providing these arrangements in DUI cases.

That means you have two options: You can plead guilty and face the full penalties of a DUI conviction, or you can plead not guilty and continue to fight for your rights. There is a chance that your charges could be dropped before the trial, but this usually occurs only if there are significant weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence. The judge in your case will decide the outcome after both parties have presented their evidence. Instead of going through this complicated legal process by yourself, call a New Jersey DUI lawyer like Edward G. Appel. It could mean the difference between years of hardship and a clean record.

Understanding DUI Charges in New Jersey: Criminal vs. Traffic Offenses

In New Jersey, driving under the influence (DUI) is categorized as a traffic violation, though the consequences of DUI charges are severe. However, a license suspension is not mandatory for all offenders. First-time offenders arrested with a blood alcohol content (BAC) level under 0.15% may avoid suspension if they quickly install an ignition interlock device (IID) in their personal vehicle. Other potential penalties associated with a DUI conviction can include community service, fines, and, in certain situations, imprisonment. Depending on the circumstances of your case, working with experienced DUI attorneys in Mansfield, NJ, can help you avoid some or all of these punishments.

You may also be charged with DUI if you operate a vehicle while under the influence of any intoxicating substances, regardless of whether they are illegal, prescribed, or available over the counter. The specific type of drug is irrelevant; what matters is your impairment and inability to drive safely.

If convicted of a drug-related DUI, you could face:

  • A license suspension of 7 to 12 months
  • Up to 30 days of incarceration
  • Fines and surcharges exceeding $3,500

A second conviction may result in a jail sentence ranging from 2 to 90 days and a 2-year suspension of your driver's license, along with increased fines and surcharges.

Here's What to Expect After Your 1st DUI Charge in New Jersey

Many individuals charged with DUI believe that they will receive leniency if it's their first offense, but this is not always true. First-time offenders may incur significant fines, up to 30 days of incarceration, and the compulsory installation of an ignition interlock device (IID) in their vehicle. Penalties increase for first-time offenders with a BAC of 0.10% or more at the time of arrest.

As mentioned above, these individuals face a longer mandatory IID installation period, larger fines, and the potential for jail time. First-time offenders will also experience a rise in their auto insurance premiums after their arrest. The State of New Jersey takes DUI offenses seriously, even for those encountering it for the first time.

Here's What to Expect After Your 2nd DUI Charge in New Jersey

Defendants who are charged again within 10 years of a prior conviction face increased penalties for a second DUI offense. They may be fined up to $1,000 and must serve at least 48 hours in jail, with a maximum of 90 days. Additionally, a second conviction can lead to 30 days of community service, a one-to-two-year license suspension, and two to four years of mandatory ignition interlock device (IID) use. These consequences, along with higher insurance rates, can significantly affect a repeat offender's life.

Here's What to Expect After Your 3rd DUI Charge in New Jersey

The court has the authority to impose stringent penalties on individuals with two or more DUI convictions within the past decade. If a person is found guilty of DUI for the third time in a 10- year span, the court may sentence them to 180 days in jail along with a $1,000 fine. Those convicted for the third time will lose their driving licenses for a duration of 8 years.

The court may also require these offenders to install an ignition interlock device for a period of two to four years after their driving rights are reinstated. Because third-time offenders are categorized as high-risk drivers, they will likely face significantly increased auto insurance rates. These individuals should anticipate an extra $1,500 surcharge on their auto insurance each year for three consecutive years. Given that these penalties can have a serious impact on both personal and professional aspects of life, it is crucial to contest the charges with help from a skilled DUI attorney like Edward G. Appel.

How Do DUI Lawyers in Mansfield, NJ, Help with DUI Cases?

Hiring a well-respected DUI lawyer often has a major impact on your case's outcome. Great attorneys will get started immediately by taking a deep dive into the particulars of your case. They'll look for issues with the prosecution's evidence, such as:

  • Did on-scene officers follow protocol when storing samples and administering chemical tests?
  • Did officers have a valid reason for pulling you over to begin with?
  • Are the results from your chemical tests reliable?

If not, a lawyer can expose these concerns, potentially resulting in the dismissal of the charges. These are just a few examples of how an attorney can challenge DUI charges for you.

In fact, our clients benefit from personalized attention, support, and a meticulously crafted defense that aligns with the specific details of their arrest. While no attorney can promise specific outcomes, we assure you that we will continue to advocate for you until you decide otherwise. We examine every detail of your case to ensure all necessary evidence is gathered and the right motions are submitted. There are motions available to suppress evidence if your constitutional rights were infringed upon during the stop, as well as motions to limit or dismiss evidence under particular conditions. He's No. 1! Tygers' triple-doubler selected with top pick in 46th News Journal Classic Draft

MANSFIELD — Mapleton head coach Nick Hickey, who will be the North coach in the 46th News Journal All-Star Classic, has never seen Kyevi Roane play a single minute of basketball in person. The only time he has ever seen the Mansfield Senior Tyger senior on the court was in highlights or ...

MANSFIELD — Mapleton head coach Nick Hickey, who will be the North coach in the 46th News Journal All-Star Classic, has never seen Kyevi Roane play a single minute of basketball in person.

The only time he has ever seen the Mansfield Senior Tyger senior on the court was in highlights or short clips on film. And yet, when Hickey won the coin toss to select whether he wanted the first overall pick in the NJ Classic draft or take Nos. 2 and 3, he didn't hesitate.

Hickey selected the Tyger with the first overall pick making him the sixth Mansfield Senior player selected No. 1 in the 21 years of the NJ Classic Draft and the first since Mario Young went No. 1 in 2016.

"I have never seen him play in person, but I have seen some film on him when I catch a highlight of something," Hickey said. "But you can tell he is a special athlete and a special ball player."

Hickey went with Roane over 21 other players who were up for selection. He was already awarded his son, Scott who is averaging 26 points per game and is the program's all-time leading scorer at Mapleton, as coaches who participate in the Classic automatically get their own players. So, when he could snag a point guard averaging more than 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists per game, he jumped at the perfect player to orchestrate an offense that could challenge the single-game scoring record of 150 points.

"It means a lot to know out of 21 great ball players around the area and my name to be the first brought up means a lot to me and my family," Roane said. "And I want to thank the coaches who picked me also. It’s pretty cool to be that guy that gets their name called first in something like this with lots of great talent and ball players."

Hickey may be at Mapleton, a member of the Firelands Conference, now, but he isn't ignorant to the history at Mansfield Senior. A 1996 Ashland grad, Hickey is well versed on Tyger basketball and knows Roane is a historic figure in the program after he reached the 1,000-career-point milestone earlier in the season.

"Being an Ashland grad and playing a lot of ball over this way growing up, I know how phenomenal that Mansfield Senior history is," Hickey said. "As far as Ohio basketball is concerned, it is a hotbed for great athletes and great basketball players so we knew we couldn't go wrong picking Kyevi No. 1."

Roane reminds him of some of the guys he played against back in the Tygers' hay day.

"Oh I played against Jerry Moton and Sean Tucker and that group," Hickey said. "They were so good and Marquis (Sykes) was a youngster coming up when I was playing. To know Kyevi has scored more points than all of those guys just speaks to how special he is."

It also helped to have some influential voices in Hickey's ear. Christian Langston, a 2014 Ashland grad, is on Hickey's staff at Mapleton along with legendary coach and former NJ Classic skipper, Walter Harrop. Harrop coached the North team in the 1989 All-Star Classic when he was the head coach at Ashland and also spent time leading the Crestview program in the 1990s.

But when Hickey won the coin flip, he looked right at Langston and allowed him to make the first pick.

"Christian knows talent," Hickey said. "He still plays a lot and runs a lot of men's leagues so he sees a lot of guys from the area who can really go. He knew right away. He told me if we get the No. 1 pick, it's a no-brainer."

And how special Roane is was on full display in a 94-88 double-overtime win over Wooster Triway last week when he posted a rare triple-double with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists. An All-Star classic has had many double-doubles with points and rebounds but it has never had a triple-double in the game's 46-year history. The assists record is 10 set by Lexington's Joey Zahn in 2016 so Roane has his sight set on doing something no one has ever done.

"It wasn’t a goal until I saw I can do it and that is gonna be a goal of mine every night I step on the floor knowing that I am capable of that," Roan said. "So yeah I’m gonna try to get that record in the all-star game for sure."

It may not feel as sweet as it did in a Tyger uniform, but Roane would relish in the feat if he happens to do it in the Classic.

"A triple-double feels good," Roan said. "It feels to me that I dominated every aspect of the game and I can be happy with that. It's something to be happy about and it’s rare but I just want to shout out my guys for trusting me the way that they do. They put so much trust in me and I put trust in them and that’s where the brotherhood starts to come in. Just trusting each other and being there for one another and I couldn’t have done it without my guys."

As the only Tyger in this year's NJ Classic, he will have to rely on some unfamiliar faces to pull off the feat. But with the confidence his new coach has in him, Roane is going to put on a show that won't soon be forgotten.

Intersection Accidents in New Jersey

Accidents at intersections, such as Friday’s collision at Route 57 and Waters Road in Mansfield Township, are a persistent safety concern across New Jersey. Intersections where rural highways meet local roads can be particularly hazardous, with risks heightened by differences in speed limits, driver attention levels, and the availability of clear sightlines.

Route 57 serves as a major regional corridor, and accidents in this area often result in moderate to severe injuries, especially during morning commuting hours when traffic is heaviest. Factors such as distracted driving, failure to yield, and unpredictable traffic movements frequently contribute to intersection crashes in rural and semi-rural parts of the state.

To help reduce intersection-related accidents, local and state officials stress the importance of defensive driving practices, strict observance of posted traffic signs, and reduced speeds when approaching crossing points. Drivers are also reminded to remain vigilant for sudden stops, unexpected turns, and slower-moving traffic at intersections like Route 57 and Waters Road.

For victims injured in intersection crashes, timely medical treatment and reliable legal advice are essential steps toward recovery and protecting long-term well-being.

Mansfield, NJ (May 7, 2025) – A two-vehicle accident with injuries was reported Wednesday evening on Allen Rd in the area of Donaldson’s Farm in Mansfield Township. The crash occurred at approximately 8:24 p.m. and prompted a response from local emergency services.

According to first responders, both vehicles sustained visible damage, and at least one person was injured in the crash. EMS teams provided care on the scene before transporting the injured party to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. The nature and extent of the injuries have not been officially confirmed.

The collision took place on a rural stretch of Allen Rd near the well-known Donaldson’s Farm, an area that, while scenic, often features limited lighting and narrow lanes. The accident briefly disrupted local traffic as responders worked to assist victims and clear the roadway.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision. Early reports suggest common rural-road risks such as reduced visibility, lack of shoulder space, or failure to yield could have played a role. No charges or citations have been announced at this time.

We send our best wishes to all those injured and hope for a smooth and full recovery.

Rural Road Collisions in Warren County

Crashes in rural areas like Mansfield Township often present unique challenges. Roads like Allen Rd—especially near agricultural landmarks—can feature sharp curves, minimal lighting, and inconsistent traffic patterns that contribute to the risk of collisions. Two-vehicle crashes on these roads are frequently the result of limited visibility, distracted driving, or unsafe passing.

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, injury crashes on rural roads tend to be more severe due to higher travel speeds and longer emergency response times. Victims may face extended recovery periods, higher medical costs, and difficulties managing insurance and legal claims—particularly if emergency care is delayed.

Getting prompt medical attention, documenting the scene, and understanding your rights are critical steps in the aftermath of such a crash. With the proper support, victims can take control of their recovery and secure the resources they need.
