MANCHESTER, NJ — Prom season brings out thoughts of sparkling gowns and styled hair and dancing the night away.
And while it's usually associated with youngsters celebrating as they near adulthood, a group of Manchester High School students flipped it around recently for the residents of a local memory care facility.
Alcoeur Gardens held its Senior Citizen Prom recently for the residents of the memory care facility in Whiting, and members of the high school's National Honor Society came to help give the residents special looks for the event.
Natalie Lelievre, a Manchester High School alumnus, reached out to the National Honor Society for help.
The Senior Citizen Prom was held on the same date as the high school's Senior Prom, so four juniors who are honor society members jumped at the chance to pamper the Alcouer Gardens residents for the "Fly Me To The Moon" event.

The students, who traveled to the memory care facility with Honor Society Heather Staples, assisted with makeup, hair, floral arrangements, jewelry selection, and table settings for the event.
Manchester's student volunteers helped to roll out the red carpet for prom attendees, whom they helped ready for a prom luncheon featuring a live band and their friends.
The district said several student volunteers spoke about their experiences with grandparents who have struggled with memory loss, and parents who work in a similar field.
"Seeing the smiles and big reveal moments brought joy to all involved," the district said. "The Manchester Township High School National Honor Society looks forward to working with Alcouer Gardens in the future and truly appreciates the opportunity to play a little role in a grand event."

JOINT BASE McGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, NJ — Ellie Hyland settled into the cockpit of Thunderbird No. 8 Friday morning, ready to get a taste of flying at high speed with the elite U.S. Air Force squad.
"I didn't do any research ahead of time," said Hyland, 25, a teacher at Manchester Township's Regional Day School, who was selected by the Thunderbirds as a Hometown Hero and invited to fly with the team.
"I really wanted to live in the moment and experience it wholeheartedly," Hyland said. When the jet took off, "it was like I was in a whole other world. It was super comfortable."
It was more than she could have imagined, too.
"He let me fly the plane," Hyland said of Air Force Maj. Brandon "Crime" Maxson, advance pilot and narrator on the Thunderbirds squad, whose jet she was on. "He even let me do a barrel roll."

Hyland, who lives in Brick, learned last week she had been selected by the Thunderbirds for the VIP experience, from among hundreds of applications from the tri-state area. The Air Force unit is in town for the Power in the Pines Open House and Air Show this weekend at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. Hyland, the Regional Day School Teacher of the Year, said the process started in March. She had to submit two essays and pass a physical to certify she was fit to fly in the F-16 Fighting Falcon, which can reach speeds up to 1,500 mph — Mach 2 — according to the Air Force.
"With a full load of internal fuel, the F-16 can withstand up to 9Gs — nine times the force of gravity," the Air Force fact sheet on the jet says. That is just shy of 200 mph.
That's the speed Hyland experienced Friday morning.
"We were coasting," she said. She said she felt "woozy" briefly but that feeling passed, giving way to sheer enjoyment.
"He let me fly for quite a while," Hyland said. "It's super cool because it's super sensitive. You just touch the controls and it moves."
Dina Silvestri, the public information officer for the Manchester Township Schools, said they were told Hyland was one of the first VIP fly-alongs in a while who did not end up getting sick from the experience.
"I honestly had such a great time," she said. "All the Thunderbirds made me feel totally welcome."
Hyland, whose name was printed on the No. 8 jet, wasn't alone in taking in the experience; her parents, grandparents and sister and brother-in-law, who work at the base, were on hand to witness it, along with Manchester Township Superintendent Diane Pedroza and Lisa Michallis, the Regional Day School principal.
"It was such a blessing that Ellie was chosen," said Silvestri, noting the close relationship the Manchester Schools have with the Joint Base. Students of some military personnel attend the district's schools, and there is a joint partnership and support for a large and active JROTC program.

"Ms. Hyland’s selection is more than symbolic — it’s a reflection of the incredible partnerships between our military and local school communities," said Rochelle Naus, deputy chief of public affairs for the Joint Base. MANCHESTER, NJ — As a 15,300-acre wildfire raged in Ocean County on April 22, threatening homes and prompting evacuations, Manchester Township jumped into action to help.
That included the Manchester Township School District, which mobilized quickly after Manchester Mayor Joseph Hankins called on the district for help during spring break.
Hankins presented a proclamation to the district at the April 30 school board meeting, praising the district's response to help its neighbors in Lacey Township, where 5,000 people evacuated at the height of the fire threat.
Hankins said the Lacey Township emergency management director contacted Manchester's emergency management director seeking help with the evacuations.
"It was a monumental task," Hankins said. "We had just gone through a similar event the year before."

"That in and of itself is stressful but not knowing where you can send people is another," he said.
Township officials contacted the school district "and within minutes you had the school open and we had the Red Cross in there and the CERT team, the community emergency response team, building beds and you know it was amazing to see," Hankins said.
The buildings and grounds department staff opened Manchester Township High School, which provided space for dozens of Lacey residents and their pets overnight into April 23.
"I am incredibly proud and grateful for how our Manchester community rose to meet this moment," Superintendent Diane Pedroza said. "I want to sincerely thank our entire community — our staff, first responders and local residents — for their compassion, their generosity and their resilience that they demonstrated in supporting those that have had to evacuate.
"Opening our doors to shelter others reflects the very heart of who we are as a district and who we are as a community," she said.
"The strength of a community lies not only in its infrastructure and institutions but in the compassion, cooperation and dedication to all it serves," the proclamation reads in part. "The Manchester Board of Education continuously demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our community, going above and beyond their educational mission to serve the greater needs of the residents ..."
"In times of emergency and great uncertainty the board of education has consistently generously opened the doors of the Manchester High School as a shelter and evacuation center not only for the residents of Manchester Township but for our neighbors in the surrounding towns ...
"Their willingness to provide the safe comfort haven for individuals and families along with their beloved pets has brought a peace of mind during some of the most stressful moments," the proclamation said in part.
"This selfless partnership has served as a shining example of unity and power and collaboration," Hankins read. "Your compassion, responsiveness and steadfast support are not only appreciated they are treasured. Our partnership is a source of strength in our entire township and we are forever grateful to the job you do."
