MAHWAH, NJ — The Mahwah chapter of Hindu Education Foundation(HEF) - a Project by Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh(HSS) recently conducted a Guru Vandana, or teacher appreciation event, to honor Mahwah School District Teachers.

Hindu American students in Mahwah were able to invite their teachers to express their gratitude, respect, and reverence for the teaching and guidance they receive from their teachers.

The event took place at the Mahwah Library on May 3rd.

Teachers from Lenape Meadows Elementary School, Joyce Kilmer School, Ramapo Ridge Middle School and Mahwah Highschool attended the event.

Teacher Appreciation Week, celebrated in the first week of May, honors the vital role of educators. In Hindu culture, teachers are revered as Gurus—mentors and guides. To celebrate this tradition, Hindu Education Foundation organizes Guru Vandana, meaning “reverence for the teacher.” This annual event allows students to express gratitude through traditional rituals, blending ancient values with modern education.

The Guru Vandana began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, which is considered auspicious in Hindu tradition. The students then entertained their teachers by performing Yoga, Skit about Sage Patanjali and classical Indian dance.

Each student performed the "Guru Puja" or teacher’s worship, by applying Tilak (red dot applied on the forehead), performing thanks and worship to the teachers and sought their blessings by touching their feet.

Teachers later described the event as "amazing, respectful, and very well organized." They also thanked HEF and HSS for demonstrating the importance of teachers in the community and society and praised the event's efforts.

HSS is a 501(c)(3) voluntary non-profit cultural organization with over 250 chapters across the United States. HSS organizes service activities and community outreach projects to promote discipline, self-confidence, teamwork and the spirit of selflessness.

MAHWAH — Adults may know what to do when confronted with bears who wander into populated areas, but most children don't.

Students in Mahwah High School's Community Problem Solving course met the challenge with their "Project Bear Aware" education course for students, which took first place in the senior division of the State Future Problem Solving Bowl in March.

The award was announced as New Jersey deals with the spring migration of young adult male bears that wander into populated areas after being forced out by dominant older members of the pack following winter's hibernation. Bears have become so prevalent that the state Assembly is considering a bill to regulate home bird feeders, which can attract bears.

The video runs just shy of three minutes and includes an entertaining reenactment of a confrontation in which two girls run away from a bear, played by a fellow student in a costume. Tips in the video to reduce bear contact include keeping trash bins locked up and tidy, keeping grills clean and cutting down on the use of bird feeders.

"Each year, the class bases their project on an area of concern," teacher Justin Saputski said. "This year, they learned about the growing black bear population, and that was the theme of this year's project."

Junior student Jeane Chung, who served as project manager, said the class was surprised by the impact that development is having on the bear population,

"We've all lived in this area most of our lives, but we didn't fully grasp how big and how much it impacts us directly," Jeane said. "People assume that this issue is limited to woodsy environments, but bears are appearing more frequently in residential areas. A survey of students and teacher showed that two-thirds have encountered a black bear, but 56% did not know what to do."

Because bears appear not only in the woods, but also in backyards, schools and playgrounds where children could be present, the group concentrated its efforts on a bear safety education program aimed at students.

The class's "Project Bear Aware" created a bundle of educational materials to be used by community organizations. It includes flyers, craft suggestions, crossword puzzles, lesson plans and a video as well as a self-published book, "The Adventures of Bergen the Bear."

Students have presented the program at area schools and have devised requirements for a Girl Scout patch on bear safety.

The win qualifies "Project Bear Aware" a spot in the international competition at Indiana University in Bloomington in June.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Patients whose doctors practice at the Paramus office of the Hospital for Special Surgery will no longer have to head into Manhattan if they need surgery.

A ribbon cutting was held Wednesday to open the HSS Northern NJ Surgery Center on Franklin Turnpike in Mahwah.

HSS is a practice whose doctors focus on orthopedics and sports injuries. The Mahwah surgery center will focus on specialized care for conditions and injuries of the hip and knee, spine, foot and ankle, hand and wrist, as well as sports medicine surgery.

HSS CEO Dr. Bryan Kelly attended Wednesday's opening, along with former pro athletes who received care at HSS and local officials.

In addition to the new outpatient surgery center, a new much larger location for doctor visits and other services has opened its doors in Paramus for those seeking care in orthopedics, rheumatolgy or endocrinology.

Encompassing 31,000 square feet, HSS Paramus-Midland Avenue is double the size of the previous Paramus location on Ridgewood Avenue, a spokesperson said. In addition to doctors' offices, the Paramus facility offers onsite imaging, including X-ray and MRI, and a physical therapy center.

A HSS spokesperson said Wednesday that last year, nearly 33,000 patients in New Jersey received specialized healthcare at HSS. And 22,000 of those patients were from North Jersey.

“HSS has led the fields of orthopedics and rheumatology in quality and patient experience for 161 years,” said Dr. Kelly, the CEO. "The HSS Northern NJ Surgery Center in Mahwah and HSS Paramus–Midland Ave are more than just facilities—they're purpose-built extensions of the main hospital, offering the same sophisticated, highly specialized care but in a more accessible location.”

The new HSS Northern NJ Surgery Center is a 7,700-square-foot facility located at 400 Franklin Turnpike, just 10 miles away from HSS Paramus–Midland Ave.

The center features three operating rooms, eight pre- and post-surgical bays and on-site central sterile processing.

Michael P. Ast, MD, chief of the Knee Service, chief medical innovation officer and director of ambulatory surgery center strategy at HSS, serves as the medical director.
