Do you have a REAL ID? Only 17 percent of people in New Jersey complied with the May 7 federal deadline to get REAL ID, according to the TSA. (That may be because a large percentage of New Jersey residents, 79 percent, have a valid U.S. passport, which will be accepted to fly instead of a REAL ID.)

LONG BRANCH, NJ — A sweeping new ordinance passed by the Long Branch City Council at this week's council meeting aims to sharply curb plastic pollution across the city — both in food service businesses and construction sites. Ordinance No. O-07-25, passed this month, updates Chapter 111 of the City Code to restrict the use of single-use plastic condiment packets and introduces strict regulations on the control of plastic dust and contaminants in construction.
Under the new rules, restaurants, cafes, food trucks, grocery stores, and other food service establishments will no longer be allowed to leave out single-use plastic condiment packets or straws for customers to grab at will. Instead, these items can only be provided upon request. The ordinance defines "condiment" as any substance used to add flavor to food and "condiment packet" as a single-use sealed container provided either by the manufacturer or the establishment.
Supporters of the ordinance argue that the move will reduce unnecessary plastic waste and align Long Branch with broader state and national efforts to promote sustainable practices. However, some business owners may find the new rules burdensome. Restaurants and cafes may have to retrain staff and implement new systems to manage condiment requests, potentially slowing service and increasing labor demands. Others may need to replace self-serve condiment stations with reusable options or printed menus explaining the new rules — all of which can add to operational costs.

Perhaps even more significant are the implications for the construction industry. The ordinance creates an entirely new article in the city code — Article IV: Control of Plastic Dust and Contaminants. Contractors working in Long Branch are now required to implement a number of measures to minimize the spread of plastic and dust particles. These include using vacuum attachments when cutting materials like AZEK, TREX, fiberglass, or plastic, working in confined areas, placing tarps under tools to catch debris, and cleaning work areas at least once daily.
While these steps are intended to protect the environment and community from microplastic contamination, they also mean increased costs for local contractors. Compliance may require the purchase of new equipment, additional labor to meet the cleaning standards, and stricter site management practices. For small or independent contractors already working on thin margins, these changes could create financial strain.
Moreover, the ordinance imposes a strict prohibition on disposing of debris, dust, or plastic into storm drains or streets. Contractors must follow specific disposal procedures and may need to install stormwater filters that meet ASTM standards if worksite runoff enters a public drain. Violators of any part of the ordinance face fines of up to $1,000 per offense, up to 90 days of imprisonment, or both — and each day a violation continues is considered a separate offense.
Despite these challenges, city officials maintain that the new regulations are necessary to protect Long Branch’s natural resources and reduce the long-term impact of plastic pollution. The ordinance takes effect immediately upon passage and publication, making Long Branch one of the first municipalities in the region to take such comprehensive steps against both consumer and industrial plastic waste.
As the law rolls out, the coming months may bring pushback or adjustment periods as businesses and contractors determine how to comply — and whether the environmental benefits will outweigh the added costs.

LONG BRANCH -- Kushner Cos.' new high-rise planned for the beachfront, called Wave Condominiums, received final site plan approval Tuesday from the city's planning board.
The condos are a pivot from Kushner's previously approved plan to build another resort hotel at ocean. The hotel would have been Kushner's third at the city's beachfront to go with the Wave Resort and the Bungalow Hotel, both located at its Pier Village properties, which is a mix of boutique shops, restaurants and apartments at the ocean.
However, Kushner Cos. said it found the hotel plan no longer feasible and went back to the city with a revised plan for luxury condos earlier this year and was granted a redeveloper's agreement with the city that included no tax exemptions.
In the financial arrangement, the city will receive $750,000 in redevelopment fees from Kushner Cos., which Mayor John Pallone said will be put to use in future city recreation projects, and future tax ratables in luxury condos.
The approved plan is for 46 condos in a step-like building with a peak height of eight stories, and two lower buildings of six and five floors built on top of a raised parking deck. Amenities for future condo owners include a roof-top pool on the lowest deck and lounge areas with interspersed landscaping.
Construction is still many months out, as the plan still needs to be memorialized by way of a resolution by the city council and Kushner Cos. needs to obtain the necessary permits, such as a state Coastal Area Facility Review Act permit, or CAFRA, for building at the beach.
Kushner Cos. started down the road to building a hotel at the corner of Morris and Ocean avenues, just to the south of Pier Village in 2017, when it began to assemble the nearly two-acre property, which would require four land purchases totaling approximately $11.5 million in cost. The land included three private homes at a 1950s-era hotel, which Kushner Cos. then leveled.
In 2018, Kushner Cos. received board approval to build a seven-story, 107 room oceanfront hotel. The next year it entered into a redeveloper's agreement to build the hotel.
A redeveloper's agreement, which establishes requirements such as design guidelines, is needed because the site is located in the Beachfront South Redevelopment Zone, one of the zones established in 1996 to revitalize the city's beachfront.

Oceanport, NJ – Boujee Foodie Con is returning for year three to the bustling grounds of Fort Monmouth in Oceanport, on May 3rd and 4th. Boujee Foodie is an outdoor, one-of-a-kind, elevated food festival, mixed with distinctive vendors, music, games, and experiences. It is an unforgettable experience for foodies, families, music lovers, and the community.
This year’s participants will be serving up food festival friendly size portions, so hungry guests can taste a wide variety of offerings. Additionally, there will be a larger kids section offering physical challenges and friendly competitions, plus face painting and photo opportunities. Once again, there will be live music performances and entertainment throughout the day, including favorite local bands.
The tented area on the grounds surrounding Russel Hall of historic Fort Monmouth will feature some of the hottest local restaurants, independent eateries, and food and beverage providers in the area. Attendees can purchase and taste a variety of samplings from local and regional establishments. The list of participants continues to grow and with a wide variety of offerings there will be something to satisfy every palate. "We're excited to be back for year three and have made some changes we think people will love, including more unique, one-of-a-kind vendors, showcasing the diverse food scene and entrepreneurs in this area," says CW Events founder, Renee Lam-Whiteman. Co-organizer Melanie Carpenter adds, “We also really focused on creating a weekend that is great for the entire family. This included adding more games that everyone will want to get involved in such as, velcro axe throwing, football challenges, basketball hoop shoot, and top notch live band performances by: Earth Monkeys, Damian, DCQ, Squad 5 and Krayzer.”
Once again, as one of the event’s main sponsors and owner of the event location, Riverwalk Center CEO Michael Abboud is donating 100% of the rent proceeds to Oceanport First Responders. To date, Oceanport First Responders have received $8500. Additionally, Boujee Foodie Con and its vendors are teaming up with local non profit organization, Lunch Break, by donating available leftover food.
Tickets can be purchased in advance for $15 at www.eventbrite.com or $20 day of the event at the gate. Price of admission covers security, shuttle service to free parking, games, face painting, photo ops, and LIVE MUSIC ALL DAY. Children under 10 are admitted free.
We love our furry friends more than anyone but sadly pets are not permitted. On Saturday, May 3rd hours are from 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday, May 4th from 12:30 p.m. to 6.p.m. Event is rain or shine.
