Chevys Fresh Mex is putting together one of the largest Cinco de Mayo parties in New Jersey.

At the Doherty Enterprises-owned locations in Clifton and Linden, the Allendale-based hospitality group’s vice president of casual dining, Kurt Pahlitzsch, said, “We’re pulling out all the stops this Cinco de Mayo to deliver an unparalleled celebration for our guests.”

He went on to say, “With electrifying music, engaging activities, and unbeatable specials, our Cinco events in Clifton and Linden are set to be the talk of New Jersey.”

Though Cinco de Mayo began as a commemoration of the Mexican army’s victory at the 1862 Battle of Puebla, it has evolved into a lively celebration of Mexican cuisine, culture and heritage.

Since Cinco de Mayo falls on a Monday this year, Chevys, like many restaurants, will hold festivities ahead of the holiday.

In Clifton, a giant outdoor tent of over 100 feet long by 60 feet wide transforms the parking lot into a party zone. On May 3, a pre-party will run from 3 p.m. to midnight with food and drinks specials; live DJs; games; a visit from the Red Bull DJ truck; and giveaways of hats, shirts, beads and concert tickets.

Linden’s indoor celebration will go from 7 p.m. to midnight and include DJ performances and exclusive drink promotions.

On Cinco de Mayo, Linden will host a combined indoor/outdoor event from 3 p.m. to midnight with food, drinks and DJ sets. Between 3 p.m. and midnight Clifton will have promotions, a DJ lineup and giveaways that include tickets to a Mets-Yankees Subway Series game.

Talking tacos

Planning for Cinco de Mayo each year typically begins in November, according to Doherty Director of Operations Brian McDonnell.

“We need to work with the local township and all our partners to have a party this big happen. Our biggest obstacle is the weather, we are at the mercy of the weather when we plan our big celebration every year, and we pray to the weather gods every year. When they are on our side our celebration is a huge success,” he said.

“The Chevys team is excited every year for our Cinco de Mayo celebration. It is the fun that we have each year that makes it all worth it. The days are long but to see and watch all the guests that attend truly enjoy the celebration makes it worthwhile every year,” McDonnell said.

Altogether, Chevys expects to welcome 5,000 guests at its two locations for the day-of events.

According to Doherty, during previous Cinco de Mayo events at Chevys, the two restaurants typically pour 60 cases of tequila and serve 30 barrels of beer. That’s in addition to the more than 1,000 tacos guests enjoy while partying, Doherty said.

Linden, NJ (Apr 28, 2025) – An injury crash occurred on Saturday evening, April 26, along the New Jersey Turnpike at the interchange with Interstate 278 and the Goethals Bridge, causing significant traffic disruption and requiring emergency response efforts.

The collision, which involved two vehicles, took place inside the interchange near Exit 13 in Linden at approximately 7:00 p.m., according to New Jersey traffic reports. Two center lanes were blocked as a result of the impact, causing delays in the northbound traffic flow.

First responders from local law enforcement, the Linden Fire Department, and emergency medical services arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. Firefighters assisted in the extraction of individuals from the vehicles involved, while EMTs rendered aid on site. At least one person sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The exact nature and extent of the injuries remain unknown at this time.

Authorities controlled the scene and diverted traffic to alternative lanes while crash reconstruction teams conducted a preliminary investigation. The roadway was partially reopened later that evening as the scene was cleared.

As investigations continue, officials have not yet released the identities of those involved, and it is unclear whether any citations will be issued in connection with the incident.

Hundreds of people, most of them Jewish families, flooded a Linden City Council meeting Tuesday to stop the second reading of a zoning ordinance designed to limit the size and scope of homes on small lots.

A statement from Linden on Thursday said people started arriving in buses about an hour before the council meeting was scheduled to begin and quickly filled the chamber past its 181-person capacity.

The crowd turned out to oppose the adoption of a zoning ordinance that would impose new conditions on expanding homes in the city, according to officials.

Jewish leaders say some in their community feel they are discriminatory.

Before the meeting could begin, city attorney Daniel Antonelli explained to the large crowd that ordinance was expected to be replaced on the agenda with an updated ordinance that addressed concerns from the community.

“We are proposing two new ordinances this evening that I believe once you have an opportunity to read, I think you’re going to be very satisfied,” Antonelli told the crowd. “At least that’s my hope.”

Linden has been revising the city’s zoning code based on recent home expansion and a lack of open spaces in the city that create a burden on the city’s stormwater management, officials said.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection adopted a municipal stormwater management plan in 2004 to address updated federal regulations on stormwater runoff and improving water quality, Linden’s engineer Nicholas Pantina said Thursday.

Several changes have been made to the state’s plan since 2023, which is why the city is updating its zoning requirements, according to Pantina.

“The proposed zoning changes aim to balance green and open space with redevelopment within the residential areas and lessen the environmental impacts on the city,” Pantina said.

Some in the Jewish community feel the revised zoning laws were discriminatory as more and growing Jewish families move into the city, Rabbi Yosef Katz told NJ Advance Media.

“These proposals follow a troubling pattern of zoning changes in recent years that have disproportionately impacted the Jewish community,” Katz said.

“In recent months, the city has introduced new zoning regulations that many believe are designed to restrict the ability of larger families—particularly in the Orthodox Jewish community—to live and grow in Linden."

Katz told NJ Advance Media that he was concerned about growing antisemitism in the area and said that some Jewish residents had received hateful messages in recent months.

A lawsuit filed in 2024 accused Linden Mayor Derek Armstead and two school officials of blatant antisemitism in discussing hiring decisions in the local school district. (The civil suit is ongoing in Union County Superior Court.)

Katz did not immediately respond to follow up questions about the city’s plan to propose a replacement to the ordinance that passed a first reading in March.

After the mayor and council received a number of objections over the previous weeks from members of the community, the governing body met last week and decided to propose a new ordinance, Antonelli said Tuesday.

At least one member of the local Hasidic Jewish community was present for the city-led meetings to devise a new ordinance, officials said Thursday.

The introduction of the new ordinances is planned for a rescheduled council meeting on Friday at 12 p.m. at Linden High School.

Officials said the full ordinances would be available after Friday’s meeting and they have not yet been made public.

Before the meeting could begin Tuesday, Antonelli and city council pleaded with the large crowd to find a seat or remove themselves due to capacity limits in the the council chamber.

For about 30 minutes, Antonelli, Council President Michele Yamakaitis and Armstead, as well as other officials tried to convince the crowd to disperse so that the council could conduct business, according to video of the meeting on Linden’s municipal YouTube page.

Mayor and council eventually called the meeting to order and quickly adjourned after 30 minutes of trying to quell the crowd.

I’m not too familiar with Polish food, or Eastern European for that matter. I’ve had it, but never to the extent of exploring the intricacies and various aspects of the cuisine.

To redeem myself as a food and culture columnist, I stopped by Syrena Polish Deli in Linden, an authentic eatery established in 2001. Almost 7% of New Jerseyans are of Polish descent, so it’s about time I acknowledged our friends from Poland.

On to the food:

Upon walking into Syrena Polish Deli, I was overwhelmed by my surroundings. The space is also a grocery store with everything Polish, like canned sauerkraut, mustards, jellies, candy, makowiec (Poppy seed cake), canned soups and a plethora of Polish specialties.

And then, there was the hot food bar!

I stood in front of the steamy trays of goodness like a kid in a candy store. I saw authentic favorites like stuffed cabbage, kielbasa, perogies, soups, beets, meatballs, chicken cutlets, cheese blintzes, seafood and dumplings stuffed with a variety of fillings.

Where do I start?

I love beets, so I had the beets with nuts salad ($5.00). The beets were tender, flavorful and perfectly cooked, and the nuts added a crunchy texture.

Next came the stuffed cabbage, of course! That is a Polish classic. Interestingly, my mother used to make stuffed cabbage (Yakhana in Arabic) back home in Damascus, Syria. I used to go nuts over those delicious cabbage rolls stuffed with rice and tomatoes.

This cabbage ($5.00) was stuffed with pork and rice. I took a bite and savored the taste and the memories. It wasn’t hugely different from what I had back home. I also tried a cheese and potato pierogi, a must in a Polish deli.

This crescent-shaped fried dumpling was tasty with creamy potatoes and a hearty cheese. Syrena Polish Deli serves a variety of pierogis stuffed with mushroom, pork, potatoes, spinach, sweet cheese, blueberries and strawberries.

Bottom line:

The food at Syrena is delicious, authentic and more than affordable, and the market is loaded with everything you might ever need from that Eastern European country.

For Polish cuisine in North Jersey, visit Piast Meats and Provisions in Garfield. Meal combinations of a meat, potatoes and two sides run around ($8.99). Notice the potatoes are automatically included! Also affordable are the soups at ($2.99) for a bowl.

In South Jersey, you can visit Heart of Europe in East Brunswick. The pierogis are ($5.00) for six and 10 for ($10). The white borsch soup, a truly authentic treat, is ($2.00) for a small and ($4.00) for a large. Now, that’s beyond affordable!
