LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Friends of the Lawrence Library will be hosting a book sale this May. Thousands of used, gently read books for readers of all ages will be available for purchase.

The sale opens to the general public on Friday, May 16, at 10 a.m. and ends Monday, May 19 at 2 p.m. at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library System, 2751 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville.

Payment by cash, check or Zelle only.

A special Early Admission event will be held on Thursday, May 15 from 1 - 4 p.m. where the public will have the first chance to get some amazing deals. Entry to the Early Admission is free for current members of the Friends of the Lawrence Library, $5 for the general public, and $20 for patrons with scanning apps or devices. This event is the only time scanning will be permitted.

Beginning May 16, entry to the sale is free and open to the general public. No scanning devices will be allowed. The book sale will be open Friday and Saturday (10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.), Sunday (12:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) and Monday (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.). Sunday and Monday will be $5 a bag. Bring your own bag.

"Whether you're a collector or just learning to read, the Friends of the Lawrence Library May Book Sale is a great opportunity to find the perfect book at a bargain price," said Mercer County Executive Dan Benson, "all while supporting the incredible work of the Lawrence Library."

Book donations for the Friends of the Lawrence Library book sale are being accepted at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch. Proceeds from the book sale fund programs and other library services that benefit library patrons of all ages.

Aiden Poot picked a perfect time to follow up a bumpy outing on the mound last week on the mound with one of the best of his career on Thursday.

What’s more, he helped lead the charge on both sides of the ball.

On the bump, he tossed five scoreless innings and at the plate, he drove in two runs and scored three times. That helped pave the way for Lawrence in a 10-3 win over Notre Dame in Lawrence Township.

“This game is really important because we had won the conference back-to-back years, and we just want to win it for a third time,” Proot said. “I feel like this was our biggest challenge to get that and I feel like being able to do so well in the game just really means a lot.”

The win broke the tie at the top of the CVC’s Colonial Division. Lawrence improved to 4-0 (10-3 overall), while Notre Dame (8-3 overall) fell to 3-1.

The last time Poot got the ball, he allowed four runs on eight hits in four innings in an eventual 7-0 loss to Northern Burlington on April 16. Two bullpen sessions helped get him back on track and everything was going his way against Notre Dame. He allowed six hits and racked up 10 strikeouts, marking the first time this season and the third in his career he’s hit double-digit punchouts.

He recorded 10 of his first 12 outs via strikeout.

“That’s his best outing of the year,” said Lawrence head coach Jim Maher. “That’s how he pitched last year for us, he was so good.” ... “Today, he was more consistently downstairs and he elevated the ball when he had to. So it’s a good sign to see him, the way he was throwing today.”

After focusing on the inside corner in his recent outings, Poot changed it up and put an emphasis on getting pitches low and away. It paid dividends, as Notre Dame only had two runners in scoring position during his five innings of work.

“That’s what had been working for me last year,” Poot said. “And I pitched well against this team last year, so I was like, might as well go back to it since (inside) hasn’t been working. After the first inning, I was really feeling it. So I felt like I had gotten back the pitching that I was lacking the first few games.”

It also helped that the offense had his back.

Poot helped himself out with with a pair of hits, two RBIs and three runs, which bumped his average on the season to .405. He was one of four players to pick up two hits in the win and 10 different players had at least one hit.

“It’s great because you just know you’re surrounded by good hitters,” Poot said. “So if I’m having a day where I’m pitching but I can’t hit, I can still count on the guys behind me and in front of me to score runs and pick me up.”

Josh Vichroski was one of the four to notch two hits and he led the team with four RBIs. He picked up an RBI single in the fourth, which knocked in Proot, to give his team a 2-0 lead. He came up again in the fifth and cleared the bases with a double that stretched the advantage to 6-0.

“He’s been swinging it really well. Him and (Teak) Toto and Deacon Moore have all started to get hot, which is big,” Maher said. “We need those guys hitting. They were scuffling a little bit early, but the three of them are trying to get going now.”

Toto got the scoring started in the top of the first with an RBI triple and Lawrence never looked back. The team tacked on four more insurance runs in the seventh, highlighted by an RBI double from Connor Willever and RBI singles from Seneca Sumners and Aiden Crowley.

Notre Dame broke through in the seventh, scoring three runs on six consecutive singles. One of the RBI hits came off the bat of Danny Cutrupi, who went 4-for-4 on the day.

The offensive eruption continues a hot stretch for Lawrence. The 14 total hits are a season-high and it was the sixth time in the last eight games Lawrence outhit its opponent after being outhit in each of its first five games. This group is averaging 10 hits over its last five games compared to 4.75 in its first eight.

“I’m really pumped,” Poot said. “I would say we have a pretty good bullpen, too. So I’m really excited. I feel like we woke up with our hitting today. If we can just continue this trend, I feel like we’re in a really good spot.”

Lawrence Healthcare Campus Partners with Lawrenceville Main Street for Fun, Photos with Easter Bunny

Lawrence Healthcare Campus is hosting its second annual Community Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 12 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The 40-acre campus, located at 1 Bishops Drive, is once again partnering with Lawrenceville Main Street to bring the Easter Bunny to Lawrence Twp. for this free-admission, family-friendly program.

The hunt, which will begin at 11 a.m. sharp and be even bigger than last year, is open to the public. Attendees can enjoy pictures with the Easter Bunny, free face painting and bounce houses. There will also be live music from School of Rock Princeton. Gorecki General Construction is also sponsoring the event.

Lawrenceville Main Street, a small community non-profit organization, is dedicated to building community, supporting and developing small businesses, and beautifying the historic Main Street. The organization relies entirely on community support through donations and sponsorships.

Two acclaimed comedians are now in-laws after their children got married.

Legendary comedian and actor Eddie Murphy recently revealed that his son, Eric Murphy, has married Martin Lawrence’s daughter, Jasmin Page Lawrence.

Murphy confirmed the news on Thursday‘s episode of “The Jennifer Hudson Show."

“Actually, they got married two weeks ago,” Murphy revealed. “They went off — everybody was making their big wedding plans, and then they decided they wanted to do something quiet with just the two of them.”

Murphy, 64, joked that his “Life” and “Boomerang” co-star didn’t have to pay for big wedding now since the couple opted for a smaller ceremony.

The couple announced their engagement via Instagram in November but neither Eric Murphy, 35, nor Jasmin Lawrence, 29, have commented publicly or posted anything on social media about the union yet.

The newlyweds began dating back in 2021. Lawrence said they met through her uncle, not their fathers, in a 2022 interview with InTouch Weekly.

“It wasn’t even our dads, and they’ve done two movies together,” she said. “They’re friends. I don’t even know. It’s crazy. But we met through my uncle, and we became really good friends. We bonded on a lot of things. Obviously, we have similar backgrounds, so we understood each other on a certain level.”

The two games this season between Lawrence and Robbinsville couldn’t have been more different.

Just 19 days ago, Tyler Bunnell tossed a one-hit shutout to help Robbinsville blank Lawrence, 1-0. Both teams combined for just eight hits.

On Tuesday, they combined for 25.

With weather causing Bunnell to pitch in the CVC Tournament semifinals yesterday, Lawrence’s offense didn’t get a chance at payback, but it was able to stay hot.

Josh Vichrosky and Connor Willever combined for five hits and five RBIs to help second-seeded Lawrence earn an 11-6 win over top-seeded Robbinsville in the CVC Tournament final at Trenton Thunder Ballpark in Trenton.

“It felt great,” Connor Crowley said. “Past two years, we’ve lost some big games and finally won one. Felt amazing.”

Lawrence made it to the final of the Mercer County Tournament last spring before losing to Hun, 10-2. In 2023, the team marched to the Central Jersey, Group 3 final before bowing out to Middletown North.

Tuesday’s win finally brought this group sweet relief.

“This is a great feeling for our school, our community, our players,” said Lawrence head coach Jim Maher. “This is our third championship game we’ve been in in two-three years. ... So it’s finally good to get over the hump and win it.”

Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the first inning but sent an average of six batters to the plate in each half inning the rest of the way.

The point of emphasis for Lawrence was aggression.

Whenever an opportunity arose to lay down a bunt or take an extra base, the team jumped at it. Several bunts caused chaos in the infield and helped prolong rallies.

After a scoreless first inning, Lawrence’s offense put up three runs in the second, third and fifth innings.

“Same thing we did yesterday against Hightstown,” Maher said. “We work on it all the time. I’m a big believer in it and in a game like this, you want to get the lead early. You make the teams play a little tight. They (have) to come from behind and we did a great job of (playing small ball) and we did a great job yesterday with it too.”

Lawrence’s pitching, which has a collective 1.77 ERA this season, struggled at times but after Robbinsville scored three runs in the second inning did a good job of limiting the damage.

Crowley, a senior, came on in relief of younger brother Aiden, a junior, in the third inning. He allowed a hit to the first batter, putting two runners on base with no outs. Crowley retired the next three batters to hold his team’s three-run lead.

In the fourth, Robbinsville cut into the deficit with a run, but Crowley picked up a strikeout and a groundout to leave the bases stranded and keep his team in the lead.

“I just kept my composure,” he said. “(I) kept calm and just believed myself and was able to get out of it.”

The offense responded in the fifth with three more runs to stretch its lead to 9-4.

Again, it was a mix of everything from drawing walks, taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch and bunting before consecutive doubles from Seneca Sumners and Aiden Poot knocked in runs.

Lawrence had a different player step up and deliver a big moment in nearly every inning. Seven different players recorded at least a hit, seven notched at least one RBI and six scored at least once.

That kind of balance is something Lawrence hopes can lead to great things i the upcoming weeks.

“I mean, it’s been great, one through nine,” Crowley said. “Everyone’s been smacking balls and it’s non-stop hitting. It’s amazing to watch.”
