Residents may be concerned as smoke comes and goes, but it's actually a positive sign, authorities say.
WARETOWN, NJ — As firefighters work tirelessly to get the Jones Road Wildfire under control, area residents will likely keep seeing smoke. They shouldn't worry, as authorities say it's actually a good sign.
"Those big smoke columns are a good thing," Forest Fire Service Chief Bill Donnelly told reporters at a press conference Thursday afternoon.
Part of how firefighters work to stop the 15,000-acre blaze is by lighting fires of their own to burn up the fuels in the wildfire's path. The goal is to removed the unburned fuel within the containment line.
"Once that's completed, and those unburned fuels burn up, we should see the smoke subside," Donnelly said.

The smoke also is worsening the air quality across New Jersey. AirNow.gov, which monitors air quality, forecasts that Friday will have "moderate" levels of fine particulate matter due to the Jones Road Fire.
"If you are unusually sensitive to particle pollution, consider reducing your activity level or shorten the amount of time you are active outdoors," the website said.

OCEAN TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- A raging wildfire in Ocean County, New Jersey, has scorched more than 15,000 acres, is sending large plumes of smoke into the sky, and has led to the closure of several roads.
The blaze, dubbed the Jones Road Wildfire, began around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday and was 50% contained as of Wednesday afternoon.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service released a map showing the containment area around the blaze:

It began in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management area in Barnegat Township and has since spread to both Ocean and Lacey townships.
Officials said Thursday morning that Route 532, which had been shut down due to the fire, has now reopened.
However, several other roads remain closed in the area.
-Bryant Road is closed between Wells Mills Road (Rt. 532) and Rt. 539
-Jones Road is closed between Rt. 532 and Bryant Road
Parts of the Garden State Parkway and Route 9 were closed Tuesday because of the smoke billowing across the area. Both highways have since reopened.
Officials said Wednesday that approximately 1,320 structures were threatened but said no residential structures have been lost. However, one commercial building, as well as multiple outbuildings and vehicles have been destroyed by the fire.
This could end up being the largest wildfire in New Jersey in 20 years, the Forest Fire Service said.
No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

LACEY, NJ — The Jones Road Wildfire in Lacey and Waretown has burned 15,300 acres and is 75 percent contained as of Monday afternoon, according to authorities.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service said that there would be no further updates unless something significant occurs.
A varying amount of rainfall fell on the northern portion of the fire Saturday, while none to trace amounts fell on the southern portion, the Forest Fire Service said in a Sunday update.
Smoke continues to linger in the area and will do so until there is significant rainfall, authorities said.
Four structures remain threatened by the blaze - a jump from the 1,320 structures threatened at the fire's peak.

All major roadways have since been reopened, though unimproved roads within the fire's perimeter are still closed.
Joseph Kling, 19, has been charged with aggravated arson and arson in connection with the fire. Authorities have not ruled out additional arrests.
Emergency FEMA funding has been granted to assist response efforts, Sen. Andy Kim announced Friday afternoon. He spent Wednesday inspecting impacted areas.
“As I walked around the areas scorched by the fire, I wanted to ensure our brave firefighters and first responders had everything possible to help contain this disaster,” Kim said. “As Ranking Member of the Senate subcommittee that oversees FEMA, I’m grateful to be able to help bring federal support to help our state during a time of critical need.”
A complete damage assessment is still underway. One commercial building in Lacey was completely destroyed, along with several outbuildings and vehicles. There have been no injuries or loss of life reported.
Visitors to the area should be cautious as trees within the fire area could be weakened.
