Intense Thunderstorms Plow Across South Jersey, Tornado Confirmed

Intense thunderstorms plowed across South Jersey Friday afternoon, with possible tornado damage in two areas.
Those storms prompted the National Weather Service to issue several severe thunderstorm warnings, a flash flood warning for the shore, and two tornado warnings.
Those tornado warnings were for a storm that primarily impacted Cumberland County and another that moved across the northern half of Atlantic County.
Preliminary storm reports from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Mount Holly said a shed was heavily damaged about two miles northeast of Hopewell Township, near Bridgeton, in Cumberland County.
Multiple reports of trees and wires being knocked down were shared from the Collings Lakes, Folsom, Buena Vista Township, and Hammonton areas.
Both of those reports were tagged with "possible tornado," which means officials will be investigating the damage.
The National Weather Service office in Mount Holly NJ will conduct a storm survey later today for the area near Folsom and Hammonton. The survey is in relation to the severe thunderstorms that moved through the area earlier today. A final assessment including results of the survey are expected to be completed and transmitted...later this evening.
There were also numerous reports of yards and roads being flooded across Atlantic County.
The good news is that those storms were moving very quickly and as of 2 PM Friday, most of them had moved offshore.
Even better news is Saturday looks to be beautiful with sunny skies and highs into the 80s. Sunday will also be nice and breezy with temperatures peaking in the 70s.
This is a developing story that will be updated when more information becomes available.

UPDATE: Small tornado confirmed in N.J. town during strong thunderstorm
The National Weather Service is sending a team of meteorologists to parts of Atlantic County in southern New Jersey Friday afternoon to determine whether damage to numerous trees, power lines and at least one house was caused by a possible tornado or straight-line thunderstorm winds.
The weather service received a report of a “possible tornado” in the Collings Lakes section of Buena Vista Township as clusters of intense thunderstorms were sweeping across southern New Jersey Friday afternoon, triggering three tornado warnings and a slew of severe thunderstorm warnings and flash flood warnings.
However, there have been no confirmed sightings of any funnel clouds on the ground, as of late Friday afternoon. The weather service said the tornado warnings were activated by meteorologists who detected cloud rotation — a key indication of a potential tornado spinning — on radar.
Meteorologist Zachary Cooper said it’s not yet known whether the storm damage was caused by a tornado or a strong thunderstorm, which is why the weather service’s Mount Holly office is inspecting the damage.
The storm survey team is expected to focus on areas in and around Folsom and Hammonton.
Buena Vista, where a large tree crashed through the roof of a house in the Collings Lakes neighborhood, is only about 9 miles southwest of Folsom, and Hammonton is about 5 miles northeast of Folsom.
The weather service also received additional reports of downed trees and downed power lines in parts of Atlantic, Cape May and Gloucester counties Friday afternoon.
The agency also received a report of “hail up to the size of a golf ball” in Avalon in Cape May County.
More stormy weather ahead
For weather-weary New Jerseyans, there’s bad news in the latest forecast. Spotty rain showers and isolated thunderstorms may pop up again Friday evening and Friday night, especially in southern counties.
“Damaging wind gusts with some possible hail will be the main concerns, but another tornado or two cannot be ruled out with this second round of severe storms,” the weather service noted.
The second round of potentially strong thunderstorms is expected between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday.
Unfortunately, the threat of severe weather will be on the table for Saturday too.
A few showers and thunderstorms are possible Saturday morning, particularly in the state’s northern and western regions.
After skies clear in the afternoon, forecasters will be keeping an eye on a strong cold front — which may trigger another batch of isolated to scattered thunderstorms.
Forecasters say there’s a lot of uncertainty over how strong Saturday’s storms will be, but they can’t rule out some severe thunderstorms and isolated tornadoes if the atmosphere gets fired up.
