EDISON, NJ — Eight students from Edison graduated from the Governor’s STEM Scholars program on Saturday.
The year-long program is part of the Research & Development Council of New Jersey.

The students were among 111 high school and college students from all 21 counties across the state who completed the immersive STEM experience.
“This year’s 111 Scholars represent the best of what New Jersey has to offer—and with this class, we’ve officially crossed the threshold of 1,000 alumni,” said Alise Roderer, Director of the Governor’s STEM Scholars. “From lab tours to research and policy briefings, these students are building lifelong connections to the state’s STEM economy and becoming New Jersey’s next generation of innovators.”

The Governor’s STEM Scholars program offers students a 360° view of New Jersey’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) economy through research, site visits, and conferences. This year’s Commencement, held at Kean University, marked a major milestone: the program now boasts more than 1,000 alumni.
A public-private partnership among the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, the Governor’s Office, the New Jersey Department of Education, the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education, and public and private research universities, the Governor’s STEM Scholars program connects high-achieving students in 10th grade through Ph.D. programs with the state’s innovation ecosystem.
Throughout the year, Scholars attended four conferences focused on STEM in government, academia, and industry.
Events were held at Rutgers School of Engineering, Montclair State University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Kean University. Scholars also participated in virtual sessions with STEM professionals from Kenvue and Stockton University, and visited industry partners including Bristol Myers Squibb.
Each Scholar participated in a community-based research project, led by a college-level team leader.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ — The Middlesex College American Sign Language (ASL) Club at Edison's Middlesex College will be hosting their next Deaf Coffee Chat on April 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
These monthly gatherings aim to foster inclusivity and promote ASL learning in a welcoming, interactive environment.
The club's inaugural Deaf Coffee Chat in February exceeded expectations, drawing more than 60 participants from across the state, the club said.
"We were in shock when ASL students and members of the Deaf community from all over the state came to be with us," said Crystal Shook, Middlesex College ESL, Languages, and Cultures professor.
The event attracted participants from various educational institutions, including Kean University, Seton Hall University, Ramapo University, Brookdale Community College, John F. Kennedy High School, Colonia High School, and several other programs.

Alyssa Pollock, founder and president of the ASL Club at Middlesex College, created these events after recognizing the need through her participation in other community Deaf gatherings. The Coffee Chats are free and open to the public, offering light refreshments, games, and opportunities for social connection.
"Unfortunately, a part of our society continues to participate in audism—a form of discrimination against deaf/hard of hearing individuals," Shook explained. "This is why our ASL Club takes the time to recognize the importance of not only the language but also the unique culture. In hopes of building more awareness, we also strive to prevent audism in our community and promote equality among the deaf and hearing."

EDISON, NJ — Beginning Monday and continuing for the next several weeks, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will begin a major pavement preservation project along Route 1 between Edison and Woodbridge.
The work will require planned daytime lane closures that could impact commuters in Middlesex County.
Crews will work on a 2.5-mile stretch of Route 1 in both directions between Townsley Street in Edison and the Garden State Parkway in Woodbridge.
The $3.2 million federally funded project aims to extend the roadway's lifespan, improve safety, and enhance driving conditions for thousands of daily commuters.
From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, and continuing daily Monday through Friday at the same time, the right lane on Route 1 northbound between Townsley Street in Edison and the Garden State Parkway in Woodbridge is scheduled to be closed for inlet repairs and concrete curb work.

Work is expected to begin near Townsley Street and progress north to the Garden State Parkway and then proceed on Route 1 southbound.
At least two lanes will be maintained. Motorists are advised to use caution, slow down, and move over, if possible.
This work is expected to take several weeks. Overnight lane closures for milling and paving are expected to begin in May. NJDOT will provide an update before any future lane closures.
