Chad Brewer was expected to be the ace of the Burlington Township staff coming into the season.
The senior right-hander delivered a performance Monday worthy of that expectation.
Brewer scattered four hits and struck out a season-high 10 batters as the visiting Falcons blanked host Doane Academy, 6-0, in a Burlington County League inter-division matchup.
“My slider was working. When I needed it for strikes, I got batters off balance,” Brewer said.
“I’ve been struggling a little bit, but today I got through the game. I was feeling good and it was one of my better days.”
Getting the ball in the bigger games, Brewer made his seventh appearance of the season and snapped a four-game losing skid. He struck out at least two batters in five of his six innings on the hill, leaving runners stranded at third in the first, third and sixth frames - closing out each with strikeouts.
“He was in a few sticky situations but got us out of them. He’s a big part of the reason we won today,” said Sean Heffernan, who pitched the seventh. “Every time he goes out there, we have a good chance to win the ballgame. He demonstrated that today.”
Burlington Township (9-8) broke the ice in the sixth when Robbie Betler scored on a delayed steal. The Falcons then opened it up with five runs on three hits and an error in the seventh - sending 10 hitters to the plate. Ryan Robles and Kelley Walsh collected RBI singles.
The Falcons finished with eight hits on the day, with Heffernan reaching a career milestone. The four-year player picked up his 100th career hit, a first-inning single. The senior finished 1-for-3 with a run scored, extending his season-long hitting streak to 17 games.

"When I found out we were having flag football, I was really happy and really wanted to join it," junior Layla Fink said.
The team is a part of the Burlington County Scholastic League, and on Tuesday night, they hosted a girls' flag football tournament for their conference.
The BCSL is the first conference to host an in-season conference tournament in the history of New Jersey high school girls' flag football.
And the Falcons came out on top, winning the championship.
"It feels nice to be the first, and I hope we can set a good beginning for future teams to come," junior Kamryn Robinson said.
Robinson's dad said the two now share a special bond.
"I was that dad that ran out and bought a football so we could go out and throw it around," Kevin Robinson, Kamryn's father, said.
Burlington Township athletic director John Taylor said the girls are trailblazers, not only for the state of New Jersey, but for their own community as they inspire others.
"It's by far the fastest growing sport. You consider there was only 16 teams in 2021, and fast forward to 2025, and now there is 98 schools," Taylor said.

Burlington County officials are asking drivers to call in with the locations of potholes on any of the 500 miles of roadway it controls.
Ups and downs in temperatures and precipitation have made this winter a challenge for road crews, according to county officials.
“While there is little we can do to stop potholes from forming, our roads crews are already working diligently to repair these hazards on county roadways,” county Commissioner Tom Pullion said in a press release.

In 2023 alone, county officials said more than 17,000 potholes were filled using more than 800 tons of patch materials.
