The Stateliners (7-5) broke open a tight game with a four-run fifth inning, followed by three more runs in the sixth to pull away from the Mountaineers (2-10).

Hannah Wodtke was dominant in the circle for Phillipsburg, pitching five shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out seven batters with only one walk. Samantha Lane pitched the final two innings, allowing three runs on four hits while recording four strikeouts and one walk.

Kayla Melsky also had an outstanding day at the plate, collecting three hits including a double and driving in one run. Shantalina Blake contributed a solo home run as part of Phillipsburg’s 10-hit attack.

The Stateliners scored their first run in the second inning before the offense exploded late in the game. After putting up four runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead, Phillipsburg added three more in the sixth to extend the advantage to 8-0.

Bernards showed some life in the final two innings, scoring twice in the sixth and adding another run in the seventh, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.

Ochab had six birdies on the day, including three on his final eight holes, highlighted by back-to back birdies on his final two holes: the par 3, 210-yard second and the par-5, 481-yard third (his 17th and 18th).

“Noah has been great, his first year on the team was last year and he went to the playoff at the TOCs at Rancocas Valley. He has really devoted his time to improving his game and competing in as many tournaments as possible. When he’s not in school, he’s at the course working on his game and it is really starting to pay off especially with his hot start this season,” said Bernards head coach Daniel Spautz, who is in his fourth year at the helm.

“He’s very levelheaded and doesn’t get too up or down and that was obvious during the state tournament last year when I believe he started +3 though the first 6 holes and then found himself in a tie for first at the end of 18. Its a treat to coach him where every hole is a potential birdie hole. Being only a junior and relatively new to golf, he’s got a ton of potential and we are starting to see that this year.”

Ochab’s teammates freshman DJ Allen (2-0ver 73) and junior Thomas Diemar (2-over 73) both tied for fourth in helping the Mountaineers capture the team title (292) by 13 strokes over second-place West Morris (305). Freshman Brady Cassidy (7-over 78) posted a top 20 finish, finishing in a four-way tie for 18th.

Mountain Lakes (310), Montville (312) and West Essex (320) rounded out the top five. Chatham, the only ranked team in the field at No. 19 in the latest NJ.com Top 20, finished in a two-way tie for eighth place with High Point.

“This was great for Noah, but also the team for sure. Thomas, who is also only a junior, came over from lacrosse and has made an immediate impact on the team and combining him with Noah, they really push each other. They can always be found together on and off the course. To round it out, we have two freshman DJ and Brady who we had been hearing about coming into this year and they have really played well for us,” said Spautz.

“This was a great tournament to be a part of with some really good teams and a few that we will be battling come state tournament time. We have the Somerset County tournament on Monday, April 21 and our Conference Tournament the following week. Playing in the KGolf classic was a great tune up for the upcoming tournaments we will be competing in. We hope to keep it rolling the next few weeks and look forward to the rest of the season. We have some talented kids who keep improving each match.”

On a cold and windy Tuesday afternoon, Bernards wasn’t quite sure what to expect as it faced Montgomery in a Skyland Conference Raritan Division tilt.

Both teams entered undefeated, and both were 1-0 in the division.

“We knew it was going to be a really scrappy and tough game, so we wanted to come out with a lot of energy,” Bernards’ Kendall Schmerler said. “We knew it was going to be cold too.”

The Mountaineers took the cold and the wind in stride and jumped out to an early lead en route to a 14-10 victory. The win put Bernards atop the division at 2-0, while the Cougars fell to 1-1.

Montgomery entered Tuesday’s game averaging over 13 goals a game with wins against Peddie, Phillipsburg, North Hunterdon and Princeton. Bernards entered at 2-0 with wins over Ridge and Hillsborough.

“We knew they had some really strong players, we’re really going to have to play gritty today,” Bernards’ Kayla Davi said. “It’s not going to be all about the flash, it’s not going to be the same players scoring, it’s about getting everyone involved.”

Bernards managed to do just that, as the Mountaineers jumped out to 5-0 lead in the first quarter with five different players contributing goals and assists. Keenan Metro got the scoring started with an assist from Davi, then freshman Mia DeRosa scored two-straight for a 3-0 lead.

Alexa Paterno then scored on an assist from Caroline Burke, and Davi closed out the quarter with a goal for a 5-0 lead after one.

Bernards kept it going in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 4-3 for an 9-3 halftime lead. During that span, Schmerler recorded her 200th career point on a goal with 23.4 seconds left in the quarter.

“It’s so awesome, senior year, I’m really happy,” Schmerler said. “My teammates really put in the work and were looking for me to make good plays, and I was appreciative of that and it was awesome.”

Things changed in the third quarter as Montgomery came out firing. Sophomore Sophia Soron scored twice in the span of just over a minute on assists from Lexi Sambol and Lexi Lopez to cut the lead to 9-5 with 8:41 left.

DeRosa scored again for Bernards on an assist from Davi for a 10-5 lead, but a goal from Elliana Pizzulli made it a 10-6 game with 6:35 to play.

“Our attitude was definitely a shift, we started getting a little chippy with each other at some points because I feel like even though we were winning, we started playing like we were losing,” Davi said of the third quarter. “We took a second, we reflected and we regrouped and we got back out there which was really helpful for us.”

Bernards then scored three goals in the final 4:22, with two coming from Schmerler, and led Montgomery 13-7 after three.

The Cougars then outscord Bernards 3-1 in the fourth quarter for the 14-10 final.

“I think our defense, for the past few games, has been playing really, really well, really molding well together,” Schmerler said. “Today I think it was no different, especially in the beginning, we were really solid. Great communication, great slides from everyone across the board.”

For Montgomery, Soron led with four goals and seven draw controls. Pizzulli contributed a hat trick, one assist and six draw controls, while Kennedy Dexter added two goals and one assist. Emma Scrudato chipped in one goal and three draw controls.

Schmerler led Bernards with five goals and nine draw controls. Davi had two goals and three assists, while DeRosa finished with a hat trick. Alexa Paterno recorded two goals and five assists, Burke totaled one goal and two assists and Metro chipped in one goal and one assist.

“I feel like we’ve been doing a really good job of spreading out on attack, getting past the 12, and that’s been huge,” Davi said. “We have a low attack, Alexa Paterno shoutout again, who’s been assisting really well, and even others who are dodging or driving. It’s just acknowledging where you are on the field and I feel like everyone’s been starting to really know where the space is and know when to cut, which has been huge.”
