Gun manufacturer Henry Repeating Arms says it is making a strategic move to relocate its operations out of New Jersey and into the Midwest, according to a statement released by the company.

The manufacturer will close its Bayonne operations and move jobs to its newly expanded headquarters in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. It will also move jobs to two additional facilities in nearby Ladysmith, Wisconsin.

The closure affects 146 workers at the Bayonne operation, according to WARN notices filed March 13.

Henry employs more than 800 people, according to its website.

According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives, Henry’s New Jersey facility manufactured 35,069 firearms in 2022. This included 25,012 rifles, 1,433 shotguns, and 8,624 handguns.

The company said in the statement that the move out of New Jersey accommodates the need for increased production capacity and better supports the company’s future growth driven by innovative firearms design.

Andrew Wickstrom, president of Henry Repeating Arms, said the new phase will help the company grow.

The New Jersey Department of Health has approved Hudson Regional Hospital’s certificate of need for the Bayonne Medical Center, officially making them the new owner and operator.

“Bayonne Medical Center is a critical asset for the local community and we are beyond gratified that its future is secured,” HRH Chair Yan Moshe said in a statement.

“In anticipation of this decision we have invested millions of dollars to improve the facility and restore services. Bayonne residents can take a deep breath that their hospital has been saved.”

HRH has owned the Bayonne Medical Center property since July 2020 and has taken a variety of actions to become its operator, including most recently being named interim operator of the acute care facility during CarePoint Health’s ongoing bankruptcy.

“I am pleased to see Governor Murphy’s decision to approve the transfer of ownership of the Bayonne Medical Center to Hudson Regional Hospitals,” noted Hudson County Executive Craig Guy.

“I am confident this change in leadership will allow the Bayonne Medical Center to continue providing quality healthcare services to Hudson County residents.”

The certificate of need resolves a long-standing set of issues caused by the owner of the property not being aligned with the operator of the hospital.

“I am very happy that the New Jersey Department of Health has issued a certificate of need to Hudson Regional Hospital for Bayonne Medical Center (BMC),” added Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis.

“This is a great development that will enable BMC to serve the community as a full-service hospital. Bayonne needs a fully operational hospital that can serve the healthcare needs of our residents and our neighbors from Hudson County.”

The announcement is not terribly shocking, given that officials recognized HRH as the new BMC operator in November and the New Jersey Department of Health’s State Health Planning Board granted HRH a certificate of need in December.

HRH had been pursuing the BMC in particular since June 2020, but after a long journey that included plenty of expensive litigation and extensive political maneuvering, a deal was reached to form Hudson Health System in October – the second try for such an endeavor.

Shortly thereafter, at the beginning of November, CarePoint filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to help secure $67 million in financing.

“We proved at Hudson Regional that a community hospital can provide world-class services,” noted HRH President and CEO Dr. Nizar Kifaieh.

“Already we have made huge strides at Bayonne Medical Center, but the most important advancement is that we have gained the trust of the healthcare providers, workers and patients. In coming months we will have a series of announcements related to additional improvements and added programs.”

Sophie Lane netted 17 points and Catie Carayannopoulos turned in eight points, five assists and 15 rebounds and the second-seeded Westfield High School girls basketball team stunned No. 1 Bayonne on Saturday, 62-55 in the NJSIAA North 2 Group 4 Tournament final.

Marin Fowler pitched in 16 points, five boards and five assists, while Megan Logan went for 15 points and five rebounds for the Blue Devils (24-6), who will face North 1 champ Ridgewood in Wednesday’s state Group 4 semifinals, 5 p.m. at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth.

“Heart and guts. We played our butts off today. It was all toughness,” Westfield coach Liz McKeon said. “We battled. Defense, rebounds, foul shots. We also took advantage of transition and ran on them as much as we could. But, really, to sum it up -- toughness.”

The championship is Westfield’s second sectional crown in four seasons after the Blue Devils took the 2022 state Group 4 championship.

Westfield now face another state power in West Orange (25-7), which handled defending champ Morristown in the North 1 final.

Hudson County champ Bayonne (25-6) is ranked No. 8 in state with its losses coming to five Top 7 teams and an out-of-state power.

“Catie played amazing defense on (Bayonne star center McKenzie) Neal and was a monster on the boards. Mairin Fowler was a beast. Tremendous leader. She was made for moments like these. Didn’t flinch on the foul line down the stretch,” McKeon said. “We just did what we’ve been doing all year; playing tough defense and sharing the basketball.”

BAYONNE, NJ - The Hudson County Board of Commissioners celebrated Kelly Carroll of Bayonne on being named as the 2024-2025 teacher of the year for Hudson County.

Carroll, currently serving as Assistant Principal at William Shemin Midtown Community School was also the 2024 Bayonne District Teacher of the Year, and the 2024 Mary J. Donnohoe Teacher of the Year where she taught for 15 years.

A lifelong Bayonne resident, Carroll went to high school at Jersey City’s St. Dominic Academy, where she competed all four years on their nationally ranked varsity dance team and was named All-State in Dance in 2001.

She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in communications from Hofstra University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Saint Peter’s University. She is currently finishing her Doctoral Program in Higher Education at Saint Peter’s University.

Carroll also holds a NJ Principal and Supervisor certification.

In her 15-year career, she worked as a Title I, second grade teacher, and the District’s Multi-Sensory Reading Specialist before becoming an Assistant Principal at William Shemin Midtown Community School in Bayonne in September 2024.

In her pursuit of promoting literacy, Carroll obtained a Wilson Dyslexia Therapist Level 1, 2 & Group Certification, Foundations Facilitator, and Reading Specialist Certification. She was the Supervisor of the district-wide 100 Book Challenge after-school reading program and yearbook coordinator, and served as a mentor teacher in the NJ Teacher & Student Teacher Mentor Program, curriculum writer, and presenter for professional development throughout the district.

She is committed to the betterment of her district as a member of the School Improvement Panel, Annual School Planning System, Gifted & Talented Committee, Data Analysis Team, and NJ Tiered System of Supports Committee.

As a life-long learner with great appreciation for the profession, she enjoys seeking professional development opportunities, sharing best practices with colleagues and bringing it all back to her students. She serves as a member of the Middle States Accreditation Committee, Hudson County Professional Learning Community Consortium, Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, The Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators, and the International Dyslexia Association.

Carroll credits her late grandparents, former Freeholder Neil Carroll Sr. and Mary Carroll, for instilling the importance of service, education, and community in her.
