A Mile Square eatery known for its Texas-style BBQ is closing its doors after 10 years of business in Hoboken. After several months of speculation around a potential closure, House of ‘Que, located at 340 Sinatra Drive, will ‘celebrate’ its 10 years in Hoboken with an “End of an Era” party this week from Thursday to Sunday. While the exact closure date is unconfirmed at this time, a member of the House of ‘Que team confirmed the closure via Instagram stories on Tuesday, April 29th. Rumors have been swirling for quite a while about House of ‘Que’s potential closure, but nothing had been announced or confirmed. Several of The Hoboken Girl readers have sent in tips, and team members noticed the spot cut down on its hours, and the building has also been up for sale on Realty.com since August 2023.

On Monday, April 28th, House of ‘Que took to its Instagram stories to announce an “End of an Era” week-long party to celebrate the BBQ spot’s 10 years in Hoboken. Operations Manager Chris Lowther reposted the event to his personal IG account, saying “It’s official we are closing after 10 years in this location. Stop in and say goodbye! I will be here all week.”

The party flyer posted to House of ‘Que’s Instagram lists events each day from Thursday, May 1st through Sunday, May 4th, including a trivia night + travel giveaway, karaoke, family brunch + Dueling Pianos, and a Cinco de Mayo grand finale. See the photo below for more information.

House of ‘Que has been a spot on the Hoboken waterfront since 2015. Located on Sinatra Drive, it was an option for Texas-style BBQ — including wings, brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. There was also a weekend brunch, events, and game-day specials, but the Dueling Pianos show each Saturday was certainly the most popular.

House of ‘Que also opened a Weehawken restaurant in Port Imperial several years ago, but that location has since closed. It’s newest venture is an American Dream Mall location in East Rutherford, which has similar vibes to its Hoboken counterpart.

Hoboken street cleaning, parking, and trash collection changes for Good Friday and Easter weekend were announced.

HOBOKEN, NJ — The city of Hoboken said that municipal offices will be closed on Good Friday, and street sweeping will be suspended that day as well.

"All other parking regulations, including meters, remain in effect," the city said.

Hop shuttle service will be suspended that day through the weekend. It will resume a regular schedule on Monday, April 21.

Waste collection, including paper recycling, cardboard, metal furniture, appliances, e-waste, and yard waste, will occur as regularly scheduled, the city said.

Waste must be placed at the curb after 7:30 p.m. Thursday, in the residential area for early morning pickup on Friday, the city said.

"Residents must remove all doors from refrigerators, washers, dryers, and ovens, as well as tie branches and put grass and leaves in paper bags," the city said. "Paper bags for yard waste can be picked up for free at the Hoboken Recyling Center at 1501 Madison St. Paper and cardboard recycling must be dry, flattened, and bundled in cardboard boxes, tied with string, or placed in blue covered bins.

"As a reminder, garbage must be placed at the curb in a bin with a tight-fitting lid and weigh no more than 50lbs. Garbage containerization was implemented to help mitigate rodent activity."

Sunday Changes

When asked about parking meters being effect on Easter Sunday, a city spokeswoman said, "I just confirmed parking meters are in effect on Sunday."

Free Vaccine Clinic And Health Screenings

The Hoboken Health Division is partnering with the Hudson Regional Health Commission to host a free COVID-19 and flu vaccine clinic at the Multi-Service Center, 124 Grand St., on Thursday (April 17), from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Free health screenings, provided by Alliance Community Healthcare, including blood pressure, weight, covid, cholesterol, and glucose, will also be available. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are recommended and can be made at HudsonCountyVax.org.

Pier 13 will officially open at 1301 Sinatra Drive North in Hoboken on Thursday, May 1st for the 2025 season, weather permitting. Opening day will run from 4PM-11PM and feature music from Tim Dawg, as well as several food trucks including Amandas Bananas, Electric Wings, Gringos Tacos, and Lobster Trap.

Pier 13 has a varied drink menu for visitors to enjoy while hanging on the waterfront, ranging from draft beers to cocktails, sangria, and frozen drinks, among other options. A few beverages visitors can expect to find on the menu include the P13R Tiki Punch, spicy margs, dragonfruit mojitos, and frozen mango chili lemonade. The full drink menu can be found on the website. The outdoor space will also continue to feature various local food trucks daily, when open (more on that below).

Pier 13 doesn’t accept reservations, so keep that in mind if you visit with a crowd. Table seating is required and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Stay updated with the most recent information on Instagram and the website.

One of the main attractions at Pier 13 is the myriad of food truck options, and this year is no exception. A few of the already announced spots include Amandas Bananas, Electric Wings, Gringos Tacos, and Lobster Trap. Once plans are finalized, the daily food truck lineup can be found here.

NEW JERSEY — Following on the heels of a federal investigation, the state of New Jersey announced on Wednesday a lawsuit against property management software company RealPage and 10 of New Jersey’s largest landlords for allegedly colluding to raise rents.

They said the scheme "violated state and federal antitrust and consumer protection laws and forced tens of thousands of New Jerseyans to overpay for rent month after month."

State Attorney General Matthew Platkin even referred to the group of defendants as a "cartel" who kept tenants struggling to pay "unlivable rents."

Over the last few years, corporate landlords have bought up properties throughout New Jersey and raised rents by amounts such as 20 percent in one year. READ MORE: Are 20-30 Percent Rent Increases 'Unconscionable'? Hoboken Suit Could Set NJ Precedent

Officials across the country have been concerned that some landlords rely on "price-fixing" software, rather than the market, to drive up rents.

If landlords in one area all raise the rents at once, it means that tenants will have nowhere affordable to move to, and will be priced out of a region where they may have set down roots.

In Hoboken and Jersey City, where rents are among the highest in the country, tenants and officials have complained of rents being raised more than $1,000 per month. READ MORE: Rents In Jersey City And Hoboken Are Highest In Country, But Are They Legal?

The state Attorney General's Office said Wednesday, "RealPage and the landlords allegedly agreed to set rents for multifamily housing properties statewide based on RealPage’s algorithmic pricing software and to exchange sensitive, non-public information to align their prices and avoid competition that would otherwise keep rent prices down."

The complaint alleges the defendants engaged in violations of the federal Sherman Act, the New Jersey Antitrust Act, and the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act.

“The defendants in this case unlawfully lined their pockets at the expense of New Jersey renters who struggled to pay the increasingly unlivable price levels imposed by this cartel,” said Attorney General Platkin.

“Today we’re holding them accountable for unlawful conduct that fueled the state’s affordable housing crisis and deprived New Jerseyans of their fundamental right to shelter.”

Average rents in New Jersey are among the highest in the nation and the state currently has a shortage of over 200,000 affordable rental homes, the state said.

'Activity' In North Jersey

"The situation in North Jersey, where a significant amount of the alleged activity occurred, is particularly dire," said a release from the Attorney General's Office. "Half of low-income renters are cost-burdened–meaning they pay more than 30 percent of their income on rent–as are nearly a quarter of middle-income renters."

“This lawsuit is about putting a stop to corporate greed at its worst,” said Jeremy Hollander, acting director of the Division of Consumer Affairs.

Along with the Texas-based RealPage, the complaint names these landlords:

What About Others?

The complaint references additional New Jersey landlords as unnamed co-conspirators.

"These are landlords owning or managing multifamily rental properties who are believed to have also unlawfully colluded to raise rents by collectively setting rents based on RealPage’s software," the state said.

A Jersey City resident, Kevin Weller, the head of the Portside East Tenants' Association, said he hoped to see more corporate landlords added. "My case against RealPage and over 25 major landlords preceded the Department of Justice's interest in these practices," he noted. "When testifying before the Assembly Housing Committee last October, I explained how these pricing algorithms significantly harm renters in buildings where city officials fail to enforce existing rent control laws."

He said Platkin should also investigate " how local government negligence enables this price-fixing scheme."

Officials Applaud Move

Jersey City Councilman James Solomon said on Wednesday, "Allegedly, RealPage — alongside many of Jersey City’s most prominent developers — directly contributed to our city’s affordable housing crisis by fixing rent prices here so they could profit. This is despicable behavior, and I look forward to swift justice on behalf of our city.”

Hoboken 3rd Ward Councilman Michael Russo, who represents a section of town with low-income housing — and an extensive wait list to go with it — said, "As the lawsuit alleges, RealPage and similar companies—including AvalonBay, [use] algorithms that allow landlords to securely share sensitive rent data, allowing them to hike prices in a coordinated manner. Back when we as Americans used to care about monopoly power and antitrust laws, this was called price collusion....The last few years have been a total disaster for people trying to access decent housing that they can afford, and we do not have room in Hoboken for those who cheat the system."

State Laws On Evictions And Increases

Many tenants are unaware that there are state laws protecting them from certain types of evictions and rent increases —and that these laws apply even to month-to-month rentals.

The state says that a tenant can withhold the amount of a rent increase if it's not "reasonable" or "conscionable," but doesn't specify the amount. A tenant must try to prove the increase is unwarranted when taken to court by the landlord. (Read more about that here.)

New Jersey also has eviction laws that apply to many types of units, saying landlords can only refuse to renew a lease, or try to evict tenants, for certain specific causes. Selling the building isn't always considered a just cause for eviction.

Lawyers and tenant advocates know the law best. Some nonprofits, such as the North Jersey Tenants' Organization, specialize in helping tenants better understand the laws.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — A bevy of wild animals have been spotted in Hoboken, Jersey City, and Weehawken in the last few years, including a coyote, deer, and even a seal in Hoboken.

Last Thursday night, Weehawken-based writer Susie Felber was surprised to see a fox when she was out for a walk by the Hudson River along Boulevard East.

Felber — the editor, writer, and publisher of the Weehawken Gazette — said, "I was walking back home, heading south. Lots of people [were] out walking and enjoying the views. Lots of tourists — suspected tourists because they were with families, well dressed, and had nice cameras. I spotted the fox and noticed people who were looking right at it, weren’t seeing it, because they focused on the skyline, not the nature that is right in front of them."

Felber said she hadn't seen a fox in her Weekawhen neighborhood before, but has seen snakes, skunks, raccoons, groundhogs, a deer, and hawks.

"I was thrilled to see the fox and stayed long enough to watch it curl up and go to sleep," she said. "[The] first fox was very exciting. I think this is in the area Weehawken purchased that won’t be developed, but I’m not sure. As I see more and more of Edgewater carving up their cliffs for development, I’m glad to have this patch of nature and evidence that it can sustain such a beautiful creature."

In March 2023, Hoboken residents reported sightings for several weeks of an animal they thought was either a fox or coyote (see photos here).

Then, there were the strange swirls of worms spotted near the Hoboken waterfront one morning after a rain. Whether lucky or unlucky, the "ring-worms" haven't been seen since.
